A laser beam as fundamental waves which is emitted from a distribution Bragg reflection (DBR) semiconductor laser is incident on an optical waveguide of a light wavelength conversion device in which domain-inverted regions and the optical waveguide are formed in an LiTaO.sub.3 substrate. The wavelength of the incident laser beam is then converted so as to obtain higher harmonic waves such as blue light. In the conversion, a drive current to be applied to a DBR portion of the DBR semiconductor laser is changed so as to change an oscillating wavelength of the DBR semiconductor laser, thereby matching the oscillating wavelength with a phase-matched wavelength of the light wavelength conversion device. Thus, the generation of the harmonic waves to be output is stably controlled.

The apparatus includes a control section which monotonously varies, in a first direction, a DBR current to be input to the DBR region while detecting the oscillation wavelength of an output light of the semiconductor laser so as to detect a DBR current value I.sub.0 corresponding to a predetermined wavelength value, and then monotonously varies the DBR current in a second direction which is opposite the first direction beyond the detected value I.sub.0, and then monotonously varies the DBR current in the first direction again to set the DBR current at the detected value I.sub.0, thereby fixing the oscillation wavelength of the semiconductor laser chip at the predetermined wavelength value.

A linearly polarized light beam emitted from a first coherent light source is focused, as a primary beam, onto a preparation via an objective lens. A subsidiary beam emitted from a second coherent light source is a linearly polarized light beam having a plane of polarization perpendicular to that of the primary beam. The subsidiary beam is focused onto the above preparation as a double-humped beam having a center in the same position as that of the primary beam. The principal portion of the subsidiary beam is equal in size to that of the primary beam. The preparation is scanned with the two beams being superimposed on each other. After transmitted by the preparation, the two beams are separated into the primary beam and the subsidiary beam again upon passing through a second polarizing beam splitter so that they are detected individually by first and second optical detectors. Output signals from the first and second optical detectors are calculated by a differential calculator and displayed on a display unit via a second control means.

The sky light is determined by averaging pixel values of the sky area. The color of the sky light can be determined based on the color of the sunlight and meteorological conditions such as clouds and fog. The color of the sunlight, the meteorological conditions and the color of the sky light can be determined by specifying parameters representing time and weather. By changing the parameters, a simulation for changing the time and the weather can be performed on the entire natural image.
