Abstract: The present disclosure includes a method that includes receiving, via a processor disposed within a lithium ion battery module, a voltage signal associated with a resistor coupled to a negative terminal of the lithium ion battery module. The negative terminal of the lithium ion battery module is coupled to a negative terminal of a lead acid battery module. The method also includes determining, via the processor, one or more properties associated with the lead acid battery module based on the voltage signal.

Abstract: An automotive battery system including a first battery that couples to an electrical system. Additionally, the first battery includes a first battery chemistry. Further, the automotive battery system includes a second battery coupled in parallel with the first battery and couples to the electrical system. Furthermore, the automotive battery system includes a first switch coupled to a positive terminal of the second battery, which electrically couples or decouples the second battery to or from the electrical system. Moreover, the automotive battery system includes a battery control unit that detects a short circuit condition of the first battery, the second battery, or both and decouples the second battery from the electrical system by opening the first switch upon detecting the short circuit condition.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present disclosure describes a battery system including a battery module with a first and second cell group connected in series; and a cell control unit communicatively coupled to a plurality of sensors, in which the cell control unit includes a first analog-to-digital converter that outputs a first cell group voltage; a second analog-to-digital converter that outputs a second cell group voltage; outputs a measured battery module voltage; and logic circuitry that determines a calculated battery module voltage based at least in part on the first cell group voltage and the second cell group voltage; and determines whether a fault is expected to be present in the cell control unit, the battery module, or both based at least in part on the measured battery module voltage and the calculated battery module voltage.

Abstract: The present subject matter relates to a battery module for use in a vehicle. The battery module may include a housing, a plurality of battery cells disposed within the housing, and solid state pre-charge control circuitry that pre-charges a direct current (DC) bus that may be coupled between the battery module and an electronic component of the vehicle. Furthermore, the solid state pre-charge control circuitry may include solid state electronic components as well as passive electronic components.

Abstract: A battery module includes a lower housing and a plurality of battery cells. The plurality of battery cells are electrically coupled together to produce a voltage. The module also includes an assembly disposed over the battery cells and coupled to the lower housing. The assembly may include a lid and a plurality of bus bar interconnects mounted on the lid. The module also includes a printed circuit board (PCB) assembly disposed on and coupled to the assembly. The PCB assembly may include a PCB. The module also includes a cover disposed over and coupled to the lower housing to hermetically seal the battery module. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing the battery module.

Abstract: The present disclosure includes an automotive battery system that uses switching devices to increase operational performance and reliability. The battery system includes a battery cell, a primary switching device electrically coupled to a terminal of the battery cell, and a secondary switching device electrically coupled to the terminal of the battery cell and in parallel with the primary switching device. The primary switching device includes an electromechanical switching device that enables charging or discharging of the battery and generates a boosted voltage. A secondary switching device includes a solid-state switching device and a diode, electrically coupled in series, which detect short circuit conditions in a power-efficient manner and remove the short circuit condition by using the boosted voltage to actuate the armature. Furthermore, parallel switching devices work together to deliver appropriate amounts of power as required by an electrical device, increasing the performance, reliability, and life-span of a battery system.

Abstract: A battery module comprising a housing, a venting assembly, a plurality of battery cells disposed in the housing, a printed circuit configured to control operations of the battery module, a vent chamber of the venting assembly, and a lid including the venting assembly. Each of the plurality of battery cells comprises a battery cell vent for venting gases from within the corresponding battery cell upward in a direction of the printed circuit. The vent chamber is disposed between the plurality of battery cells and the printed circuit. The vent chamber is configured to direct the gases vented from the battery cell vent toward an opening for venting the gases from the battery module. The lid is disposed over the plurality of battery cells and holds the printed circuit above the plurality of battery cells.

Abstract: A battery module may include a housing, a plurality of battery cells disposed in the housing, a battery terminal extending from the battery module for coupling the battery module with electrical components in the vehicle, and a contactor. A voltage supplied to a relay coil in the contactor may generate a magnetic field to actuate a contactor switch. The battery module may also include a printed circuit board (PCB) disposed in the housing. The PCB may include a relay control circuit configured to control a current flowing across the relay coil, and the relay control circuit may operate in a pull-in mode to transition the contactor switch into a closed position and in a hold mode to maintain the contactor switch in the closed position.
