Abstract: A bipolar solid-state battery includes N solid-state battery cells. Each of the N solid-state battery cells includes M solid-state cores each comprising a first current collector, cathode active material, a separator, anode active material, and a second current collector, where N and M are integers greater than one. The M solid-state cores are connected in parallel by connecting the first current collectors of the M solid-state cores in each of the N solid-state battery cells together and by connecting the second current collectors of the M solid-state cores in each of the N solid-state battery cells together. N−1 clad plates including a first side made of a first material and a second side made of a second material. The N−1 clad plates are arranged between adjacent ones of the N solid-state battery cells and the N solid-state battery cells are connected in series by the N−1 clad plates.

Abstract: A battery system includes: at least two battery modules, where each of the at least two battery modules includes three strings of battery cells; and a switch control module configured to: determine state of charges (SOCs) of the strings of battery cells, respectively; determine, using model predictive control based on the SOCs, periods of phases, respectively; determine, using model predictive control based on the SOCs, periods for the strings, respectively, to be connected to a second positive terminal and a negative terminal during the phases, the determination of the periods for the strings including: setting the period for one of the strings of one of the battery modules to end before the end of a phase; and setting the periods for the other two strings of the one of the battery modules to end at the end of the phase.

Abstract: A vehicle system is provided and includes a modular dynamically allocated capacity storage system (MODACS) and an active management module. The MODACS includes blocks of cells. The active management module is configured to: detect a first state of a first block of cells of the blocks of cells; determine whether a safety fault condition exists with the first block of cells based on the first state of the first block of cells; in response to detecting existence of the safety fault condition, isolate the first block of cells from other ones of the blocks of cells; subsequent to isolating the first block of cells, actively discharge and detect a second state of the first block of cells; and based on the second state, continue isolating the first block of cells or reconnecting the first block of cells such that the first block of cells is no longer isolated.

Abstract: A capacitor-assisted battery module includes a housing, a positive terminal, a negative terminal, one or more capacitor-assisted battery cells and one or more first switches. The one or more capacitor-assisted battery cells are disposed in the housing and include one or more battery terminals and one or more capacitor terminals. The one or more battery terminals are connected to battery electrodes. The one or more capacitor terminals are connected to capacitor electrodes. At least one of the one or more battery terminals and the capacitor terminals is connected to the negative terminal. One or more first switches is configured to connect the one or more capacitor terminals to the positive terminal. An overall voltage of the capacitor assisted battery module is measured across the positive terminal and the negative terminal.

Abstract: A capacitor-assisted hybrid lithium-ion electrochemical cell assembly includes two positive electrodes having a first polarity, each having at least two electrically conductive tabs disposed on at least one first edge and at least one second edge. Further, two negative electrodes having a second polarity each having at least two electrically conductive tabs disposed on at least one first edge and at least one second edge. At least one of the two positive electrodes or negative electrodes are distinct from one another. The electrically conductive tabs are substantially aligned in the electrochemical cell to respectively define a plurality of positive electrical connectors and a plurality of negative electrical connectors to reduce current density during high power charging and discharging.

Abstract: A battery control system includes T contactor paths connected in parallel between a battery and a load, where T is an integer greater than one. Each of the T contactor paths includes a first contactor and a second contactor connected in series with the first contactor. Each of the T contactor paths includes at least one of a first voltage sensor configured to sense a first voltage between the first contactor and the second contactor; and a current sensor configured to sense current flowing through the first contactor and the second contactor. A second voltage sensor is configured to sense a second voltage at one end of the T contactor paths. A third voltage sensor is configured to sense a third voltage at an opposite end of the T contactor paths.
