摘要:
The subject invention is a novel apparatus for the administration of intravenous fluids. The invention is particularly well suited for accurately and efficiently administering intravenous fluids over a wide range of flow rates. Disclosed is an intravenous fluid administration apparatus having at lease one flow line capable of administering fluid at high flow rates and comprising an airless, dripless, fluid monitoring chamber. A preferred embodiment comprises a main flow line which diverges into at least two flow limbs, where one flow limb is a low-flow limb and another flow limb is a high-flow limb, each having separate flow indicators, and with the flow limbs typically converging into a common tube for fluid delivery to the patient. The subject invention also discloses a novel flow meter, which is particularly well suited for measuring and indicating flow rates over a wide range, without the introduction of air bubbles into the fluid flow being measured. The novel flow meter of the subject invention comprises an elastic displaceable member in a housing, whereby the relative position of the displaceable member, as effected by the amount of force exerted on the displaceable member by the fluid being measured, indicates the flow rate of the fluid.

A novel connection device, and method for its use, for connecting a volume displacement detection device and a gas composition detection device in line with an intubation tube is disclosed. The connection device allows a user to combine two systems commonly employed by medical personnel to assess the location of an intubation tube placed into a patient. The two systems have alternate means of assessing the location of an intubation tube in a patient and therefore, when combined into a single unit via the connection device, improve the accuracy of placing a tube in a desired location while reducing or eliminating complications associated with misplacement. A kit comprising components that may be assembled to provide a device for assessing the proper placement of an intubation tube in a patient is also disclosed. The kit may be used in any environment, but is particularly well suited for emergency, pre-hospital settings requiring intubation where quick assembly of the components is essential.

The subject invention provides systems and methods for monitoring prescription medications. In particular, systems and methods are provided for monitoring patient compliance with a given prescribed regimen as well as monitoring the origins of a prescription drug. The subject invention provides a central computer and a portable device, wherein the portable device includes at least one sensor for detecting a target marker. The target marker of the invention represents either the presence of a specific prescribed medication or identify the proper origins of a medication.

The subject invention pertains to a system for imaging the human airway having highly advantageous optical and physical characteristics. In a specific embodiment, the human airway can be imaged during the intubation procedure. The excellent characteristics of the imaging system of the subject invention result, in part, from the use of plastic optic fibers. Plastic fibers are more robust than the glass optical fibers used in currently available imaging systems, and are therefore capable of being bent and/or twisted with less concern of breakage. In addition, the lower costs of plastic fibers enables scopes of the subject invention, in a specific embodiment, to be manufactured for single patient use thereby eliminating the requirement for cleaning, special care, the maintenance of expensive inventory, and most importantly eliminating the opportunity for cross contamination between patients. A further aspect of the subject invention concerns a novel sheath which covers the portion of the imaging system which enters the patient. In this case, the sheath and its optional associated fiber optic illumination is disposable after each use.

This invention relates to novel compositions containing temporary visual indicators and methods for using these compositions. Specifically, this invention relates to a sunscreen composition containing an indicator that is visible when the substance is applied to the skin, but becomes invisible shortly after application. The continued presence of the indicator allows the indicator to be reactivated temporarily to the visible form so that a user can verify the presence of the sunscreen. The visible indicator ensures that the sunscreen is applied evenly and completely to the area to be protected, but becomes invisible so as not to interfere with the action of the sunscreen or discolor the skin.

Disclosed herein are apparatuses and methods to monitor respiration and abnormal respiration events utilizing plethysmography. The apparatuses and methods provide an alternative to conventional respiration monitoring methods while enabling accurate yet minimally interruptive and invasive monitoring of respiration. The methods and apparatuses may be employed in the context of sleep studies to determine respiratory related sleep disorders.
