Polyurethane prepolymers are described which are prepared from 2,4′-diiso-cyanate diphenylmethane (2,4′-MDI), a polyol component and an aliphatic diisocyanate. These prepolymers can be cured with aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and/or aromatic amines to form a cured urethane elastomer. In comparison to cured urethane elastomers based on monomeric 2,4′-MDI, these prepolymers provide elastomers with extended pour life, i.e. they exhibit a slower rate of viscosity buildup after curative and prepolymer are mixed which results in a reduced propensity to crack during the curing process and gives the opportunity to cast larger parts. In comparison to polyurea/urethanes prepared from cured TDI-prepolymers and which optionally include H12-MDI, the prepolymers of the invention have better health and safety aspects.

The present invention relates to a multi-stage membrane filtration process for reconcentrating the overspray from a one-component, aqueous coating composition containing high molecular weight components having a weight average molecular weight of at least 2000 and at least 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the organic components of the coating composition, of a low molecular weight component having a weight average molecular weight of less than 2000, that has been diluted with spray booth water from spray booths having wet flushing to form a booth/water overspray mixture bya) preconcentrating the booth water/overspray mixture in an ultrafiltration unit to obtain a first retentate containing high molecular weight components and a first permeant containing water and at least a portion of the low molecular weight components,b) treating said first permeant and the third permeant obtained in step c) below in a reverse osmosis unit to obtain a second permeant containing essentially pure water for recycle as booth water and a retentate containing low molecular weight components,c) treating said first and second retentates in a nanofiltration unit to obtain a third permeant containing water and a minor portion of low molecular weight components and a third retentate which largely corresponds in composition and concentration to said one-component, aqueous coating composition.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing hydroxy-functional polyurethane carbonates by reacting a) a dihydroxy- or higher hydroxy-functional polymer having a number average molecular weight of 500 to 100,000 and containing aliphatic carbonate groups and optionally ester groups with b) compounds containing at least one primary or secondary amino group and at least one hydroxy group to form urethane groups, wherein components a) and b) are present in amounts which correspond to a molar ratio of carbonate and ester groups of component a) to primary and secondary amino groups of component b) of greater than 1:1 to 20:1. The present invention also relates to the hydroxy-functional polyurethane carbonates obtained by this process and to their use as a binder component in polyurethane compositions, especially coating compositions.
