    摘要: An explosion proof microwave heated solvent extraction apparatus or system for extracting organic materials includes a pressure resistant microwave transmissive extraction container, which is preferably of reinforced polyetherimide lined with fluoropolymer, in a microwave radiation heated chamber, with a device for controlling a microwave radiation generator, such as a magnetron, in response to the presence of any solvent vapor in a collection container for rupture diaphragm discharged material from an extraction container or in exhaust gas from the chamber. The presence of the solvent in the collection container or exhaust gas is preferably detected by a semiconductor gas sensor which decreases its electrical resistance in the presence of solvent vapors, thereby increasing its voltage and thus controlling operation of the magnetron, turning it off when solvent vapor (and a potentially explosive gas mixture) is present. Also described are other explosion prevention systems, including a fluoropolymer sheet covering a chamber ceiling and ceiling light, and a process for safely extracting organic materials, utilizing the described apparatus.

    摘要: The danger of explosion due to decomposition of high-pressure industrial process gases, such as ethylene, is reduced by maintaining in an inert atmosphere at least part of an evacuation system included between a pressurized vessel within which the decomposition may take place, on the one hand, and the atmosphere, on the other. The evacuation system to the atmosphere for the gases contained in the high-pressure vessel, includes (1) an evacuation pipe adjacent to the vesel; (2) a safety means separating the evacuation pipe from the vessel; (3) a sealing means located in the evacuation path of the gases and occupying the entire cross-section of the evacuation pipe; (4) a first gas supply circuit connected by a pipe to that part of the evacuation pipe that is located between the safety means and the sealing means, and means for the first supply pipe to control the volume of gas supplied by the first supply circuit; and (5) a second gas supply circuit connected by a pipe to the sealing system, and means for the second supply pipe to control the volume of gas fed by the second supply circuit. The apparatus is useful for the recovery of decomposition products for the purpose of averting atmospheric pollution, as well as for reducing the risk of explosion.

    摘要: A method for preventing physical explosions, particularly of the smelt-water reaction type, in kraft chemical recovery furnaces. Upon detection of the presence of liquid water in the furnace, a solid compound capable of highly endothermic chemical reaction upon thermal decomposition is introduced into the furnace to cover the molten smelt on the furnace bottom. The decomposition reaction serves to inert the furnace with the nonflammable gases produced thus eliminating further heat production due to combustion in the char bed while solidifying the molten smelt (i.e., removing sensible heat stored therein) which is the source of explosive energy. The materials which may be employed for this purpose are alkali and alkaline earth carbonates and bicarbonates including sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate.
