摘要: A first surface mirror includes a reflective layer (e.g., Al or Ag), at least one dielectric layer and at least one protective layer of or including high density diamond-like carbon (DLC). The high density DLC enables the protective layer to be applied at a relatively small thickness which enables undesirable color often associated with DLC to be prevented or minimized, while at the same time good protective characteristics (e.g., scratch resistance) can be realized.

摘要: A heat-formable mirror comprising a flat substrate capable of plastic flow upon application of heat and a sputter-deposited coating formed on the surface of the substrate. From the substrate outwardly, the coating comprises a transparent amorphous layer and a reflective layer comprising contiguous first and second different metal films. The first metal film, positioned nearer the substrate than the second metal film, is a reflective metal film, and the second metal film comprises a protective film that is less reflective than the reflective metal film, the second metal film being of niobium, tungsten, tantalum, iron and nickel and being present in a thickness sufficient to protect the first metal film and avoid significant reduction of reflectance during heat forming of the mirror.

摘要: The subject of the invention is a process for depositing, especially continuously, on a glass ribbon (10) of a float line, a reflective layer (3) based on a metal whose melting point is less than or equal to the temperature at which the glass ribbon acquires dimensional stability. The deposition is carried out in a controlled atmosphere, this being inert or reducing, when the glass ribbon (10) has already acquired its dimensional stability, by bringing the surface of the said ribbon into contact with the metal (22) in pulverulent form or in molten form, the temperature of the ribbon during contacting being chosen so that the powder melts and coalesces, or so that the molten metal forms a sheet, at the surface of the ribbon, leaving a solid continuous layer when the temperature of the ribbon is at a temperature of less than or equal to the melting point of the metal.

摘要: A decorative mirror having a reflective silver layer deposited on a transparent sheet. A substance which reacts with silver is applied to the silver layer to create randomly distributed areas containing reaction products including non-metallic silver where the visible light reflectance of the mirror is modified or interrupted. In order to manufacture the mirror, a transparent sheet is wetted with a silvering solution to form a reflective silver layer, and while the sheet is still wet with the silvering solution the sheet is contacted with randomly distributed droplets of a solution of a substance which reacts with silver, the two solutions being made up using different solvents. The substance which reacts with silver may be a tin compound in an alcoholic solution, the silvering being effected with an aqueous solution. The silver layer whose reflective properties have been modified may be overcoated with a second silver layer, and the whole protected with further layers, for example of copper and paint.
