A holographic optical element (HOE) that is comprised of a deep image hologram and a method for using this HOE as a security device are described. The deep image hologram is viewable with a collimated or at least partially collimated light source having a center wavelength in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum and a spectral bandwidth, wherein the spectral bandwidth of the collimated or at least partially collimated light source at least partially overlaps the spectral bandwidth of the deep image hologram. The deep image hologram is not viewable (i.e., appears essentially unrecognizable to the human eye) with a diffuse lighting source, such as ordinary room lighting.

Holographic methods for recording fast movies whose speed is limited by the laser pulse duration if the recording material has sufficient sensitivity to reliably record a frame of the fast event with a single pulse. The method we describe uses the selectivity of multiplexed holograms to resolve frames that are recorded with adjacent pulses. Specially designed pulse generators are used to generate the signal and reference pulse trains. We experimentally demonstrate the system by making movies of laser induced shock waves with a temporal resolution of 5.9 ns, limited by the pulse width of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser used in the experiments.

A method, system, and apparatus provide for the creation and use of a holographic filter. The holographic filter has multiple superpositioned holograms within a volume holographic medium. These superpositioned holograms synthesize a filter shape with multiple peaks at specified positions. The shape of the holographic filter matches a spectrum of a substance. The holographic filter may then be used (e.g., in a spectrometer) to simultaneously detect peaks in the spectrum of the matching substance.

A method and apparatus for making holograms includes a technique for exposing a film substrate or other light-sensitive medium to consecutive two dimensional images, together representative of a physical three-dimensional system, to generate a three dimensional hologram of the physical system. Low beam ratios are employed to superimpose multiple (20-300) images on the substrate. Each image is relatively weak, but the combination of the series of weak images ultimately appears as a single clearly defined hologram.

A hologram is fabricated by opening a volume phase reflection hologram formed in a recording medium such as a positive photoresist. The opening occurs by forming a second hologram, such as an off-axis hologram, in the same recording medium. The opened hologram can be replicated in metal and the metal can be used to emboss the fringe pattern of the opened hologram into plastic. A full range of colors in the visible spectrum may be obtained by metallizing the embossed plastic structure and then by overcoating it with appropriate clear dielectric layers.

A method and system of imaging a moving object within a microfluidic environment includes illuminating a first side of a flow cell configured to carry the moving object within a flow of carrier fluid with an illumination source emitting at least partially coherent light, the at least partially coherent light passing through an aperture prior to illuminating the flow cell. A plurality of lower resolution frame images of the moving object are acquired with an image sensor disposed on an opposing side of the flow cell, wherein the image sensor is angled relative to a direction of flow of the moving object within the carrier fluid. A higher resolution image is reconstructed of the moving object based at least in part on the plurality of lower resolution frame images.
