An aqueous dispersion of a vinyl copolymer resin is prepared by polymerizing 1 to 15 parts by weight of a polyoxyethylene-containing hydrophilic polymerizable vinyl monomer of which polyoxyethylene moiety has an average molecular weight of 2,000 to 10,000, 99 to 85 parts by weight of at least one specific polymerizable vinyl monomer and 0 to 5 parts by weight of alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids, salts thereof or anhydrides thereof in an organic solvent, and dispersing the resulting vinyl copolymer resin solution in water.
Abstract:
A coating composition contains at least 15 percent by weight of an ungelled reaction product of:(i) at least 2 percent by weight of an amine having in a molecule thereof at least one amino hydrogen atom, and at least one silicon atom directly bonded to a hydrolyzable group;(ii) at least 4 percent by weight of a material containing at least one epoxide group, at least 30 percent of said material being essentially free of hydroxyl groups; and(iii) a material selected from vinyl alkoxysilanes; nonfunctional organosilanes; organosilicates; and partial hydrolysis products thereof; the percentages by weight being based on the total weight of the resin solids of the coating composition including (i), (ii) and (iii).

Novel coating compositions are disclosed which comprise aqueous dispersions of polyamine resins in the form of their acid salts along with azetidinedione crosslinking agents and other optional adjuvants. The compositions give rise to improved methods for the electrodeposition of heat-curable films on substrates. The compositions and methods find particular utility in the cathodic deposition of coatings and films on automotive parts and household appliances.
Abstract:
There is disclosed linear polymers and copolymers of polymerized monoethylenically unsaturated monomers having a weight average molecular weight from about 1,500 to about 15,000, with most of the polymer ends being terminated with hydroxyl groups, one at each end of the polymer molecule. These polymers have an average of from about 1.6 to 5 hydroxyl groups per polymer molecule. Thermosetting coating compositions containing these polymers are also disclosed. The monomers which are polymerized may include a small proportion of hydroxy-functional monomers, but desirably consist of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers lacking hydroxyl functionality. The polymers are produced by polymerizing the monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in organic solvent solution medium containing a free radical initiator and a proportion of a chain-terminating agent which is a bis hydroxyorganic xanthogen disulfide in which the organic group is preferably an alkylene group contains from 2-18 carbon atoms to provide the desired molecular weight. The polymers are preferably liquid to slowly flowable at room temperature in the absence of organic solvent.

Abstract:
An aqueous coating composition comprising from 45 to 98 parts by weight (solids) of aqueous resin(s) and from 2 to 55 parts by weight (solids) of finely divided water-insoluble resin(s), in which at least a part of said aqueous resin is selected from amphoteric resins having both carboxyl and amino groups. The resins may have mutually reactive functional groups.

Abstract:
Improved process for the preparation of aqueous emulsions of addition copolymers having functional groups to provide thermosetting capability via condensation. The process improvement resides in reducing the amount of unwanted premature condensation of the functional group. The process has two steps, one consisting of polymerizing a portion of the monomer reactants at a temperature not above 60.degree. C. if the functional group is present and the other of continuing the polymerization with the addition of the remaining monomer reactants at a temperature not above 60.degree. C. and at a pH in the range of from 1 to 7. The process is of use in producing improved thermosetting enamels.
