The polymer comprises: a water insoluble vinyl monomer free of polar groups; vinyl nitrile; a vinyl monomer containing sulfonate groups; and a polar vinyl monomer from the group consisting of: polar acrylate esters; vinyl acetate; polar methacrylate esters and a substituted acrylamide containing hydroxyl or carboxylic ester groups. The invention also relates to a fluorescent pigment and method for preparing the dispersion and pigment.

An aqueous plastics dispersion is manufactured by copolymerization of several olefinically unsaturated monomers, one of them at least being free from amide and sulfo groups, one of them at least having an amide group and one of them at least having a sulfo group. Copolymerization is carried out in an aqueous medium under usual conditions. The resulting copolymer has a second order transition temperature of 20.degree. C. at most. The plastics dispersion is compatible with cement and serves as additive in cement-containing building materials.

The upward drift in viscosity which is characteristic of paper coating compositions prepared from alkali-swellable latices to which alkali has been added can be arrested at any desired level by including in the coating composition 0.1-10 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of dry solids in the uncompounded alkali-swellable latex, of a poly- C.sub.2-4 alkylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 100-5,000. Polyethylene and polypropylene glycols having molecular weights of about 1,200 are shown to produce excellent results with latices of carboxylic copolymers of butadiene and styrene.

A water-redispersible powder composition comprising (a) 100 parts by weight of a powder consisting of a water-insoluble film-forming polymer prepared from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one monomer selected from monomers having a carboxylic function and acrylamide or methacrylamide, and (b) 2-40 parts by weight and preferably 8-22 parts by weight of at least one amino acid or a salt thereof. A method for preparing said composition and the use thereof are also disclosed.
