    Abstract: A modulator device for converting digital data into modulation of an optical signal includes an electronic input for receiving an input data word of N bits and an electrically controllable modulator for modulating the intensity of an optical signal, the modulator including M actuating electrodes where M≧N. An electrode actuating device, most preferably a digital-to-digital converter, operates actuating electrodes so that at least one electrode is actuated as a function of values of more than one bit of the input data word. According to an alternative, or supplementary, aspect of the invention, the set of electrodes includes at least one electrode having an effective area which is not interrelated to others of the set by factors of two. In one preferred implementation, a Mach-Zehnder modulator also provides phase modulation to give QAM functionality. Another implementation employs a semiconductor laser.

    Abstract: A method of mapping a collection of images, or other higher dimensional items including text documents, and three-and-higher dimensional objects, onto a navigable grid for browsing via a user interface comprises obtaining for each of the images a list of nearest neighbor images and similarity scores for each nearest neighbor; placing a first image on a cell within a grid; from a respective list of nearest neighbors of said first image, finding images that maximize a compatibility score with images already placed on the grid and placing resulting images on neighboring cells; and continuing to place further images on the grid until all cells visible to a user are filled with images. As the user pans or zooms the grid, more cells move into the visible area of the screen and are filled with images in the same way.

    Abstract: A tunable tilting device is described. The device includes a tilting element and a suspension structure that has one or more flexures coupled to the tilting element. The suspension structure has a variable bending stiffness and configured to bend due to a tilting motion of the tilting element around a pivot axis. The suspension structure is responsive to a tuning force actuating a variation of an extension stress or a compression stress of the suspension structure, and thereby can vary the bending stiffness of the suspension structure.

    Abstract: Described is a superconductive layered structure and an article including this superconductive layered structure on a substrate structure. The superconductive layered structure comprises a stack including at least one bi-layered assembly formed by first and second layers of similar superconducting material compositions, the second layer being superconductive at predetermined temperature condition, the first layer being a substantially thin layer and having a c lattice parameter selected in accordance with those of the substrate structure and the second layer, such that said first layer is non-superconductive at said predetermined temperature condition thereby allowing the second superconductive layer to be desirably thick to provide high critical current density of the superconductive layer.
