A mutually compatible combination of additives and their use to impart anti-wear, oxidation inhibition and friction modification to power transmission compositions, particularly automatic transmission fluids, is disclosed. The additives comprise an organic phosphite ester such as triphenyl phosphite and a hydroxyl amine compound, such as that having the formula ##STR1## preferably in combination with a dispersant such as a polyisobutenyl succinimide or a borated derivative thereof.

This reaction product can solubilize significantly more phosphorus and boron per weight of compound than other known compounds and is used as an antiwear, antioxidant, and extreme pressure additive in lubrication oils.

The present invention provides a novel cyclic phosphate such as 1,3-dioxa-2-phospha-6-thia-cyclooctane-2-(dodecylthiodi(ethyleneoxy)-2-oxide, and its use as an anti-wear, anti-oxidant, and/or friction modifying agent for oleaginous compositions such as fuels, and lubricating oils particularly automatic transmission fluids. A new use of overbased metal phenates and/or sulfonates as friction stability promoters for conventional friction modifying agents is also provided.

A fluid having a mineral lubricating oil base and containing the combination of an oil-soluble tris (C.sub.8 -C.sub.24 hydrocarbyl) phosphite ester and an oil-soluble C.sub.8 -C.sub.24 hydrocarbyl substituted phenol, the weight ratio of said phosphite to said phenol ranging from about 4:1 to 1:4, preferably 3:1 to 1:3 whereby elastomer compatibility of said fluid is enhanced. The phosphite ester-substituted phenol combination imparts to the fluid the property of maintaining the chemical and physical properties of seals under oxidizing condition in automatic transmissions, power transmissions and power steering systems and thereby improves retention of the fluid in these mechanical structures; preferably when at least an inhibitory amount of an anti-oxidant capable of trapping free radicals at temperatures above 65.degree. C., preferably 80 .degree. to 200.degree. C. is present.

A two-cycle oil additive composition and concentrate having improved detergency, lubricity and antiwear properties which more effectively controls deposits related to ring sticking comprising A) at least one dispersant prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid acylating agent with a polyalkylene polyamine and optionally a high molecular weight acylating agent; B) a second dispersant which is a succinimide such as prepared by acylating a polyalkylene polyamine with polyisobutylene succinic anhydride; and C) at least one polyolefin; at least one of the dispersants being a borated dispersant and which further optionally comprise at least one of the following: D) a sulfurized alkylphenol; and E) a phosphorous-containing antiwear agent.
