摘要: Embodiments herein illustrate patterned servo data that is used to facilitate subsequent servo writing to a magnetic disk while allowing the patterned disk to be planarized with a relatively simple planarization process. One disk drive system includes a magnetic disk that is patterned with magnetic lands and nonmagnetic grooves. The magnetic disk also includes bootstrap bands that may be configured at an inner diameter of the magnetic disk. The magnetic lands of the bootstrap bands have varying sizes and are patterned as servo data having a uniform polarity of magnetization. The bootstrap bands have a width that is sufficiently narrow to support an air bearing surface of a slider. The data tracks are circumferentially configured proximate to the bootstrap bands. The slider reads the patterned servo data to facilitate writing of additional servo data in the data tracks.

摘要: A method for adaptively applying an error-correcting code to a storage device is disclosed. A determination is made that a system is in an idle state of input/output requests. First data symbols are copied into a first location within a buffer. First data symbol errors corrected using a first error-correcting code. Second data symbols including corrected bits are written in a second location on the recording media with a second error-correcting code. An error number for the second data symbols in the second location is determined. If the error number is below a first threshold error number, the first data symbols are deleted. If the error number is above the first threshold error number, the second data symbols are deleted.

摘要: An optical disk drive uses an optical disk with spatially separated multiple phase-change WORM recording layers. The optical disk has a light transmissive substrate onto which the laser light is incident. The substrate supports at least two spatially separated multi-film recording stacks, each stack including an active recording layer of phase-change WORM material. The disk is either an air-gap structure wherein each recording stack is supported on a separate substrate and the substrates are separated by an air-gap, or a solid structure wherein a solid light transmissive spacer layer separates the recording stacks. Each of the recording stacks located between the substrate on which the laser light is incident and the farthest recording stack includes an active phase-change recording layer and an optical interference film in contact with the recording layer. The recording layer is made sufficiently thin to have good light transmissivity, but at this low thickness, without any other layers, is not sufficiently reflective to act as a recording layer with suitable servo and recording performance. The optical interference film in contact with the recording layer has a high index of refraction relative to the adjacent recording layer and spacer to increase the optical interference effect in the recording stack. The optical interference film optimizes the contrast, reflectivity and transmissivity of the recording stack. The optical interference film has low absorption so that laser light can pass through it to focus on a farther recording layer. This allows the farther recording layers to be written using reasonable laser power.

摘要: The method to detect and determine the profile of the material property or the structure changes not only on surface but also at the subsurface, of a storage medium or a scanned sample. This method comprises the following steps: (a), a nondestructive periodic or modulated perturbation is applied to the sample to be scanned. (b) the perturbed sample is then scanned using a microprobe, e.g., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) or atomic force microscopy (AFM), which is responsive to the applied periodic or modulated perturbations and (c) the modulated output signals from the microprobe, in combination with the input perturbation signals, are processed and demodulated to automatically control the motion of the probe, and to determine the profiles of the material properties or the structure changes of the scanned sample.

摘要: A disk that is identified as defective in a manufacturing process is reused for conditioning a deposition tool that deposits a magnetic material onto disks. After the disk has been identified as defective, a surface of the disk is cleaned in a cleaning tool to remove a lubricant material using a dry etch process. The cleaned disk is moved from the cleaning tool into the deposition tool. The deposition tool is conditioned by depositing the magnetic material onto the cleaned surface of the disk. Because the disk has been cleaned, reusing the defective disk to condition the deposition tool does not contaminate the deposition tool.
