In particular, the invention provides for compositions of oral tissue-adherent salts that release biocidal ions on a controlled release basis and thereby provide and maintain an essentially uniform concentration of biocidal ions above the MBC or MIC of the target bacteria at the site of application in the mouth for an extended period of time. 摘要： Linear, polymeric biguanides or salts thereof wherein the polymeric chain is terminated at the cyanoguanidine end group by a C.sub.2 -C.sub.90 primary or secondary amine which is optionally substituted with a functionality such as fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, nitro, hydroxyl, ether, sulfide, disulfide, sulfoxide or sulfone. The polymeric biguanides have a high level of biocidal activity accompanied by a low level of toxicity to host organisms and are therefore useful in bactericidal, algicidal and fungicidal compositions, especially in ophthalmic compositions.

The amines may be straight or branched chain alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, acylic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or polycyclic in nature. The aminosaccharide biguanides have a variety of uses such as for anti-microbial compositions, chelating compositions, cosmetic compositions, surface tension reductants, flocculants for flocculating negatively charged suspended particles, and the like.

摘要： A one-step process for sterilizing a contact lens using an aqueous solution of a sterilant which may be a peroxygen disinfectant, an inorganic hypochlorite compound or a hypochlorite precursor compound. The process involves the step of contacting the lens with a solution containing a sterilant (e.g. hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, etc.) and activated carbon for a period of time to effect sterilization of the lens and to decompose substantially all of any sterilant remaining after sterilization of the lens to ophthalmologically innocuous by-products. The activated carbon has a surface area in excess of about 500 m.sup.2 /g and a pore volume of at least about 0.75 ml/g.
