The present invention relates to an orthopedic fastener for fixing an implant, suture, or tissue to a bone. The fastener comprises a blind rivet and a closing element. The blind rivet includes a head at a proximal end, a shank connected to the head, and an anchoring portion near a distal end. A bore extends through the head and shank from the proximal end to the distal end and the bore has a polygonal cross-section through the anchoring portion. The closing element has a body with an outer surface and is configured and dimensioned to be received in the anchoring portion. The outer surface of at least a portion of the closing element distal end has a polygonal cross-section flaring along the longitudinal axis toward the closing element distal end. The anchoring portion of the blind rivet severs into a plurality of anchoring legs when the closing element is pulled in the bore toward the blind rivet proximal end to thereby prevent rotation of the fastener.

A femoral head-neck prosthesis (1) which allows natural straining of the upper femur to prevent bone loss. The natural angle of loading of the bone is determined prior to the operation, and the prosthesis is implanted with its longitudinal axis (AX-1) parallel to the natural angle (AX-5). The prosthesis is constructed to inhibit axial fixation and “splinting” of the prosthesis below the interface between the femur neck and the prosthesis on the upper femur. Splines (19) on a stem (13) of the prosthesis help to fix the prosthesis against rotation and toggling motion. The prosthesis is asymmetrical about its longitudinal axis to provide further stability when implanted. The prosthesis and its method of implantation preserve the trochanter and cap the femur to prevent microscopic debris from entering the interior bone.

Apparatus and method are disclosed for maintaining the proper positioning of an implant (310, 504) within a prepared bone cavity (312) during cement injection and curing. First stabilization means (340, 480), implantable within the bone cavity, minimize lateral movement of the implant distal end, while second stabilization means (330, 334, 406, 404), physically separate from the first stabilization means (340, 480), minimize both the lateral movement of the implant proximal end and the rotational movement of the implant overall. In the preferred embodiment, the second stabilization means (330, 334) includes an aperture cap (334) removable securable to the end of a prepared bone. This cap (334), preferably further includes first and second ports (322, 336) associated, respectively, with cement injection and cement over-pressurization. In an alterative embodiment, the second stabilization means (406, 404) includes a manually operated mechanism enabling (404) the implant (504) to be temporarily, yet rigidly, secured thereto in accordance with a desired orientation, preferably affording adjustments along multiple degrees of freedom prior to the rigid securement thereof.
