    摘要: A piezoelectric film device has a piezoelectric film element and a power supply circuit. The piezoelectric film element is formed of a first electrode, a second electrode, and a piezoelectric film that is sandwiched between the first electrode and second electrode and has a polarization vector in the film thickness direction. The polarization vector is inverted by application of a predetermined voltage or higher through the first electrode and second electrode. The power supply circuit supplies voltage for inverting the polarization vector. The piezoelectric film has each different lattice constant depending on the direction of the polarization vector. The piezoelectric film device keeps a different displacement position corresponding to the direction of the polarization vector even when the voltage application is stopped.

    摘要: A piezoelectric optical relay array having one or more array elements. Each array element contains a transparent mirror housing, located at the intersection of two optical paths. A liquid metal slug is moved within a channel passing through the transparent mirror housing by the action of piezoelectric elements. The liquid metal slug is moved in or out of the transparent mirror housing to select between the optical paths. When the liquid metal slug is within the transparent mirror housing, an incoming optical signal is reflected from a reflective surface of the slug. The liquid metal of the slug adheres to wettable metal surfaces within the channel to provide a latching mechanism.

    摘要: On a substrate are configured piezoelectric elements composed of a mirror device, piezoelectric thin films, electrodes, and elastic members, and application of a voltage to the electrodes causes flexure deformation in the piezoelectric thin films, so that the mirror device is actuated. A plurality of the piezoelectric elements are arranged in parallel with a longitudinal direction thereof, and torsion springs are provided so as to extend in a direction orthogonal to the longitudinal direction and so as to hold the mirror device in connection with the substrate. The mirror device is connected to the piezoelectric elements through strain absorbers. In such a configuration, the torsion springs serve as a rotation axis, and the mirror device is inclined about the rotation axis.

Multiple optical switching components can be arranged to form an optical switching device. Optical switching components and devices can be fabricated according to conventional microfabrication practices including film deposition, planarization, and photolithography techniques.

    摘要: A pressure actuated optical relay containing a transparent mirror housing, located at the intersection of two optical paths. A solid slug is moved within a channel passing through the transparent mirror housing by the action of pressure exerted by an actuation fluid. The solid slug is moved in or out of the transparent mirror housing to select between the optical paths and is wetted by a liquid metal. When the solid slug is within the optical path, an incoming optical signal is reflected from a wetted surface of the slug. The liquid metal forms a surface tension bond between the slug and wettable metal surfaces within the channel to provide a latching mechanism.

    摘要: A method and structure for an optical switch. According to the structure of the present invention, a liquid-filled chamber is housed within a solid material. A plurality of seal belts within the liquid-filled chamber are coupled to the solid material, while a plurality of piezoelectric elements are coupled to a plurality of membranes. The plurality of membranes are coupled to the liquid-filled chamber, and a plurality of optical waveguides are coupled to the liquid-filled chamber. The plurality of seal belts are coupled to a plurality of liquid metal globules. According to the method, one or more piezoelectric elements are actuated, causing one or more corresponding membrane elements to be deflected. The deflection of the membrane element changes a pressure of actuator liquid and the change in pressure of the actuator liquid breaks a liquid metal connection between a first contact and a second contact of the electrical switch. The breaking of the liquid metal connection is operable to block or unblock one or more of the plurality of optical waveguides.

    摘要: In accordance with the invention, a piezoelectrically actuated relay that switches and latches by means of a liquid metal is disclosed. The relay operates by means of a plurality of shear mode piezoelectric elements used to cause a pressure differential in a pair of fluid chambers. Differential pressure is created in the chambers by contracting and expanding the chambers due to action by the piezoelectric elements. The differential pressure causes the liquid metal drop to overcome the surface tension forces that would hold the bulk of the liquid metal drop in contact with the contact pad or pads near the actuating piezoelectric element. The switch latches by means of surface tension and the liquid metal wetting to the contact pads.
