Structure of an automatic opening and closing system for a vehicle is simplified, thereby reducing the cost. A base end of an arm member is swingably connected to a back door. One end of a cable is fixed to the base end of the arm member, and the other end of the cable is fixed to a distal end of the arm member. A drum is provided in a close side of the base end of the arm member and open side of the distal end, and is fixed to an output shaft of a drive unit and driven to be rotated by an electric motor. Middle part of the cable is wound around the drum, and when the electric motor is actuated, the cable is reeled onto the drum so as to be actuated in the direction in which the base end or the distal end approaches the drum.

A drive system for a hinged gate of a vehicle, which includes: a motor unit, a rack and pinion mechanism, a link member connected to a point of the hinged gate, and a shaft member fixed to the rack, to which the link member is rotatably connected. The motor unit includes a motor, gears, and a casing accomodating the gears. The rack and pinion mechanism includes a pinion driven by the motor unit and the rack movably supported on the casing of the motor unit. The casing has a guide casing, which extends in a longitudinal direction of the rack. The guide casing is formed to have a closed section surrounding the shaft member and is provided therein with a guide member configured for guiding the rack.

A power drive system is adapted for a sliding door mounted on at least one side of a vehicle for sliding movement forwardly and rearwardly of the vehicle. The system includes a reversible motor. A bracket is guided within a guide along a fixed path between the opened and closed positions of the door. An elongated drive member is slidably disposed within the guide and connected to the bracket at one end for driving the bracket along the fixed path. A translator mechanism operably engages with the drive member for powering movement of the door. The translator mechanism can include a rotatable hub, operably engageable with the drive member, a gear transmission for driving the hub, and a clutch mechanism for connecting the motor to the transmission. The translator mechanism preferably has sufficient power to pull the sliding door into a primary latch position with respect to the corresponding portions of a latch mechanism attached to the door and frame defining the door opening. A power striker moves the door into and out of sealing engagement with the frame. A lock mechanism selectively maintains the latch in a locked position. At least one sensor provides an input signal to a control system corresponding to movement of the door, position of the lock mechanism, and position of the power striker for controlling the door drive unit, power striker drive unit, and lock mechanism drive unit in accordance with a program stored in memory.

An apparatus is provided in which a motor 11 with reduction gears, a clutch 12 and a gas stay are provided between a vehicle body 2 and a tailgate 1 so that a fully opened position of the tailgate can be held by virtue of a thrust of the gas stay only, and in this apparatus, when a closure of the tailgate from its own weight is detected after the motor with reduction gears is disconnected, the motor with reduction gears is connected to the tailgate to drive to forcibly close it after the tailgate is driven to be opened to the fully opened position thereof. By this construction, when the holding force of the opened position is short, since the tailgate is closed after it is opened to the fully opened position once, cargo loading and unloading work can be completed while the tailgate is so closed.

A power closure system (40) for a vehicle panel (22, 24) includes position initialization techniques that ensure accurate position initialization. According to this invention, any slack in a coupling (62) between the vehicle panel and a motor (42) for moving the vehicle panel is removed prior to obtaining an initialization position reading when the panel (22, 24) is in a closed position. The inventive arrangement also includes determining a desired torque at which to operate the motor (42) during a position initialization procedure.

A fully automatic hinged residential door system is described suitable for quadriplegics, or other persons confined to wheelchairs. A wireless command operated through a hand held or mounted transmitter instigates a series of operations which unlocks the entry way, turns on appropriate lights, opens the door through at least ninety degrees, allows entry or egress, and responds to close commands in manual or automatic mode. The door is fail safe and can be operated automatically during power outages. A means of manual key or code operation is maintained. The system comprises a low voltage power supply, an opening device comprising electric motors, light controlling apparatus, a locking and unlocking device, force limiting hardware, and a movable door sill. The unit is compatible with all existing hinged door openings and can be retrofitted, or used as part of new construction.
