Abstract:
Virus-like particles (VLPs) of mammalian-hosted viruses, such as SARS-CoV and influenza viruses, have been recombinantly produced from Vero cells. The VLPs closely emulate the exterior of authentic virus particles and are highly immunogenic. They can elicit not only humoral but also cellular immune responses in a mammal. Compositions and methods related to the VLPs are also described.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a device for detecting cancer cells. The device includes a light source for generating light (e.g., a light emitting diode), a first optical filter selected from the group consisting of a band pass filter and a long pass filter, a second optical filter (i.e., a band pass filter) disposed between the light source and the first optical filter, and a sample receiver for receiving a sample. The sample receiver is disposed between the first and second optical filters. The first optical filter, the sample receiver, and the second optical filter are aligned so that light emitted from the light source passes sequentially through the second optical filter, the sample receiver, and the first optical filter.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are novel chitinase polypeptides and nucleic acids encoding the polypeptides. Also disclosed are related vectors, host cells, compositions, and uses.
Abstract:
A dual-polarity mass spectrometer includes an ion source, a negative ion mass analyzer, and a positive ion mass analyzer to measure both the negative and positive ion spectra of a sample material simultaneously. The ion source includes a sample surface on which the sample material is positioned, the sample material providing positive ions and negative ions when excited by a laser beam or an energetic particle stream. A first extraction electrode is connected to a voltage higher than the sample surface to attract the negative ions from the sample electrode. A second extraction electrode is connected to a voltage lower than the sample surface to attract the positive ions from the sample electrode. The negative and positive ions are analyzed simultaneously by the negative ion mass analyzer and the positive ion mass analyzer, respectively.
Abstract:
An immune composition containing Globo H or its fragment (e.g., SSEA3) and an adjuvant, e.g., α-GalCer, for eliciting immune responses against Globo H or its fragment and uses thereof in cancer treatment. Also disclosed is a method of treating cancer by inhibiting the activity of one of FUT1 and FUT2, both of which involve in Globo H biosynthesis.
Abstract:
Method of treating hypertension with a trans-aconitic acid containing composition (e.g., a water extract derived from a monocotyledon plant).
Abstract:
A method, system and device to identify, study and/or mimic carbohydrate-protein interactions on cell surfaces and in solution measured by a glycan microarray. In some instances the method, system and device uses very small quantities of carbohydrate as low as attomol. In some instances the system, method and device is high-throughput. The small quantity sensitivity may allow for close placement of carbohydrate array members wherein due to close proximity multivalent interactions with proteins may be identified.
Abstract:
A diamond-based composition that contains (1) a diamond crystallite having chemically derivatized surface groups, and (2) a polymer having functional groups, in which a portion of the functional groups bind to the chemically derivatized surface groups non-covalently. Also disclosed are methods of using such composition for analyzing a biological sample by determining the identity of biomolecules bound to the composition.
Abstract:
Orthogonally protected disaccharide building blocks for synthesis of heparin oligosaccharide. The disaccharide building block has a formula (I), in which L is a leaving group, P1, P2, P3 and are different, and of them P1 is an ester-type protecting group, P2 is a hydroxyl protecting group that could be oxidized to a carboxylic acid, P3 is a hydroxyl protecting group, and P4 is a hydroxyl protecting group which allows chemoslective deprotection with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ). Acting as an elongation unit, the disaccharide building block of formula (I) may react with a starting unit of formula (II) to synthesize a heparin oligosaccharide.
