DEUTRATION OF THE SUBSTRATE IN ITS LIQUID STATE IS EFFECTED WITH DEUTERIUM GAS IN THE PRESENCE OF A GROUP VII OR VIII METAL CATALYST AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN ABOUT 100-300*C.

Lubricating compositions useful for lubricating high temperature alloys are prepared by adding such compounds to oils of lubricating viscosity.
