Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of improving the durability of water-repellent films deposited on the surface of a substrate and to a coated article having a water-repellent film of improved durability deposited on the substrate surface. The method includes the steps of simultaneously abrasively and chemically preparing the surface to expose an increased number of bonding sites on the substrate surface by applying a dispersion including an acid solution and an abrasive material to the surface. The dispersion is then removed and the water-repellent film is formed over the prepared surface. The bonding sites react with the water-repellent film to more effectively bond the film to the substrate and thereby improve the durability of the water-repellent film. The abrading material is preferably selected from the group consisting of alumina, ceria, iron oxide, garnet, zirconia, silica, silicon carbide, chromic oxide, pumice and diamond, and the acid solution is preferably selected from the group consisting of solutions of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, tartaric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrobromic acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, oxalic acid and citric acid.

A method and composition for coating scored regions or holes in glass articles prior to heat treatment in order to maintain residual compressive stresses and reduce venting are disclosed. The method and composition of the present invention utilize silica-containing sols which gel and density and ultimately form glassy films during the heat treatment of the coated glass articles.

A method is disclosed for making an organoalkoxysilane/metal oxide sol-gel composition in an essentially aqueous medium by partially hydrolyzing an organoalkoxysilane with a limited amount of water which is essentially completely consumed in the hydrolysis reaction, adding a metal alkoxide of titanium or zirconium to the essentially anhydrous partially hydrolyzed organoalkoxysilane, completely reacting the metal alkoxide with the partially hydrolyzed organoalkoxysilane to form an oxide network and then completely hydrolyzing the composition in water.

An organoalkoxysilane/alumina sol-gel composition and method for its production are disclosed whereby an aluminum alkoxide is hydrolyzed in water to form a sol, to which is added a hydrolyzable organoalkoxysilane of the general formulaR.sub.x Si(OR').sub.4-xwherein R is an organic radical, R' is a low molecular weight alkyl radical, and x is at least 1 and less than 4. The composition is dried and cured to form an organosiloxane/alumina monolith or coating on a substrate.

A flexible printed circuit (FPC) having testing pads thereon is provided. The FPC comprises a plurality of bonding pads and a plurality of testing pads, wherein each of the testing pads is disposed corresponding to each of the bonding pads, and the testing pads are electrically isolated from the bonding pads. After the bonding pads of the FPC are bonded to pins of a display, the testing pads are electrically connected to the bonding pads on the FPC via the pins of the display. Therefore, the FPC bonding yield can be determined by measuring the electrical property of the testing pads.
