Abstract: A catalytic converter includes a catalyst. The catalyst includes a metal oxide support and platinum group metal (PGM) complexes atomically dispersed on the metal oxide support. The PGM complexes include a PGM species selected from the group consisting of an atom of a platinum group metal, a cluster including from 2 atoms to less than 10 atoms of the platinum group metal, a nanoparticle including 10 or more atoms of the platinum group metal, and combinations thereof. An alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal is bonded to the PGM species. The alkali or alkaline earth metal is part of a structure including oxygen atoms and hydrogen atoms. A barrier is disposed between a first PGM complex and a second PGM complex.

Abstract: An aftertreatment system utilizes chemical reactions to treat an exhaust gas flow. A system for aftertreatment of the exhaust gas flow includes a NOx sensor configured to monitor within the exhaust gas flow one of a lambda value and a NOx concentration value and a computerized processor device configured to calibrate the monitored value for presence of one of NH3, H2, and hydrocarbons. In one embodiment, the system further includes a pair of NOx sensors, each monitoring both a lambda value and a NOx concentration value. In another embodiment, the system controls the aftertreatment based upon the calibrated values.

Abstract: A three-way catalyst device (TWC) includes a first catalytic brick (FCB) and a second catalytic brick (SCB) downstream from the FCB. The FCB has a first washcoat applied to a first support body including ceramic and/or metal oxide particles, Pd particles, and Rh particles, and has at most 35 g/ft3 Pd and at most 7.5 g/ft3 Rh. The SCB has a second washcoat applied to a second support body including ceramic and/or metal oxide particles, Pt particles, and Rh particles, and has a Pt loading of at most 35 g/ft3 Pt and a Rh loading of at most 7.0 g/ft3 Rh. The FCB can have 25 g/ft3 to 35 g/ft3 Pd and 5.5 g/ft3 to 7.5 g/ft3 Rh and the SCB can have 25 g/ft3 to 35 g/ft3 Pt and 5.0 g/ft3 to 7.0 g/ft3 Rh. The TWC can receive exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine powering a vehicle.

Abstract: Sinter-resistant catalyst systems include a catalytic substrate comprising a plurality of metal catalytic nanoparticles bound to a metal oxide catalyst support, and a coating of oxide nanoparticles disposed on the metal catalytic nanoparticles and optionally on the metal oxide support. The oxide nanoparticles comprise one or more lanthanum oxides and optionally one or more barium oxides, and additionally one or more oxides of aluminum, cerium, zirconium, titanium, silicon, magnesium, zinc, iron, strontium, and calcium. The metal catalytic nanoparticles can include ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, rhenium, copper, silver, and/or gold. The metal oxide catalyst support can include one or more metal oxides selected from the group consisting of Al2O3, CeO2, ZrO2, TiO2, SiO2, La2O3, MgO, and ZnO. The coating of oxide nanoparticles is about 0.1% to about 50% lanthanum and barium oxides. The oxide nanoparticles can further include one or more oxides of magnesium and/or cobalt.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and vehicles are provided for estimating nitrogen oxide values for vehicles. In accordance with one embodiment, a system includes a memory and a processor. The memory is configured to store one or more kinetic models pertaining to a propulsion system for a vehicle. The processor is configured to at least facilitate obtaining a nitrogen value pertaining to a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit of the propulsion system, obtaining an initial nitrogen oxide measurement via a nitrogen oxide sensor of the propulsion system, using the nitrogen value as an input for the one or more kinetic models pertaining to the propulsion system, generating a kinetic model output from the one or more kinetic models, and estimating an updated value for the initial nitrogen oxide measurement based on the kinetic model output.
