A hydraulic pressure control arrangement controls operating fluid pressure supplied to the first pressure chamber at least to a value higher than a first predetermined value which causes engagement of the frictionally engaging elements and to a second predetermined value lower than the first predetermined value, which inhibits creeping of the frictionally engaging elements. When the operating fluid pressure is lower than the second predetermined value, a first valve opens to allow escape of the operating fluid from the second pressure chamber to the first pressure chamber. When the operating fluid pressure is at least lower than the first predetermined value, a second valve opens to permit flow of the operating fluid from the first pressure chamber to the second pressure chamber, to thereby cool the frictionally engaging elements.

An operating fluid pressure regulator controls operating fluid pressure applied to a hydraulically operating portion of the direct-coupling mechanism, and the direct-coupling mechanism applies an engaging force corresponding to the operating fluid pressure thus controlled to the input and output members. A vehicle speed sensor detects the speed of the vehicle, and a slip sensor detects the value of a predetermined parameter indicative of an amount of relative slip between the input and output members. When the detected vehicle speed falls between a first predetermined value and a second predetermined value larger than the first predetermined value and at the same time the detected value of the predetermined parameter is outside a predetermined range, a control device causes the operating fluid pressure regulator to vary the magnitude of the operating fluid pressure so that the predetermined parameter falls within the predetermined range.

An improved power steering device which has a pinion shaft connected with a steering wheel, a rack rod which is connected with steerable wheels and whose rack is in mesh with the pinion of the pinion shaft in the gear box, a power cylinder for hydraulically actuating the rack rod, and a changeover valve for selectively connecting the first and second hydraulic chambers of the power cylinder with the hydraulic pressure source and the oil reservoir. The pinion shaft is rotatably supported in the oscillating cage which is rotatably mounted on the gear box in a manner such that the axis of the oscillating cage is offset a certain distance from the axis of the pinion shaft, whereby the oscillating cage rotates about its axis when the steering torque is applied to the pinion shaft. The oscillating cage is connected with the changeover valve so that the latter is actuated by the rotary movement of the oscillating cage. With this construction, the changeover valve can be made to respond accurately to the steering torque and at the same time it is possible to reduce the size and simplify the structure of the device.
