A method of marking is disclosed in which a propellant stream is passed through a channel and directed toward a substrate. Liquid marking material, such as ink, is controllably introduced into the propellant stream and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon a substrate. A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and marking material allow for high throughput, high resolution marking. Multiple marking materials may be introduced into the channel and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate, or mixed or superimposed on the substrate without registration. One example is a single-pass, full-color printer.

Alternatively, the actuator includes antagonistically arranged expansion chambers that operatively apply reciprocating forces to the object. In other embodiments, the actuator includes plural expansion chambers arranged in series or in parallel in order to increase the overall extent of attainable displacement or to amplify the force generated by the actuator.

Resistance layer structures comprised of a plurality of conductive charge storage nodes, collection electrodes, and an electrically controllable resistance element which connects the storage nodes and the collection electrodes. The resistance of the electrically controllable resistance element can be switched between a low impedance, so as to permit a rapid charge interchange between the various storage nodes and the collection electrodes, and a high impedance, so as to permit an integration of charge onto the storage nodes. Beneficially, the electrically controllable resistance element is implemented as the active region of a metal-insulator-semiconductor device.
