The present invention relates to the manufacture of alkyl p-toluates from an alkyl p-toluic acid ester and a mono-functional, branched, linear or cyclic medium chain length alkyl alcohol, and their use as a plasticizer in polymers. Additionally, the present invention relates to articles and materials comprising such alkyl p-toluates.

A thickened grease composition is provided by process of heating a mineral oil and 12-hydroxystearic acid with lithium hydroxide and forming a simple lithium grease to which at least one component selected from the group comprising succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, 6-hydroxycaproic acid, dimethyl succinate, dimethyl glutarate, dimethyl adipate, methyl hydroxycaproate, cyclohexanediols, methyl 5-hydroxyvalerate, methyl valerate, gamma butyrolactone, and methyl levulinate or mixtures thereof.

Nickel compositions for use in manufacturing nickel metal compositions, and specifically to methods of making basic nickel carbonates used to produce nickel metal compositions are disclosed. By varying the molar ratios of carbonates and bicarbonates to nickel salts, the methods provide basic nickel carbonates that produce superior nickel-containing solids that react more effectively with phosphorous-containing ligands. The phosphorous containing ligands can be both monodentate and bidentate phosphorous-containing ligands.

The invention relates to tube cores for yarn, especially elastomeric yarn such as spandex. The tube cores include a moisture barrier, which provides an increase in strength for a tube core including the same amount of paper or a maintenance of strength for a tube core including a reduced amount of paper.

An applicator instrument (1600) for dispensing surgical fasteners includes a housing (1606) and a curved shaft (1616). Surgical fasteners are disposed within the curved shaft for being dispensed from the distal end of the curved shaft. An advancer (1466) is disposed inside the curved shaft for shifting the surgical fasteners one position closer to the distal end of the curved shaft each time the advancer moves distally. A firing element (1474) is disposed inside the curved shaft and is movable between the proximal and distal ends of the curved shaft for dispensing the surgical fasteners from the distal end of the curved shaft. A staging assembly (1521) is adapted to receive a leading one of the surgical fasteners from the advancer as the advancer moves distally to shift the leading surgical fastener into substantial alignment with the firing element when the advancer moves proximally.

A thermoplastic composition comprising from about 50 to about 99 by weight percent of a nylon 6,6 resin, from about 1 to about 50 by weight percent of a polymer performance modifier and about from 0.01 to about 25 by weight percent of a silicone based additive, wherein the silicone based additive comprises an ultrahigh molecular weight siloxane polymer that is unfunctionalized and non-reactive with the polyamide resin, wherein the thermoplastic composition has an impact strength value which is greater than the combination of the polyamide resin and the polymer performance modifier or the combination of the polyamide resin and the silicone based additive and wherein the thermoplastic composition has an ultimate tensile strength that is at least 80% that of the combination of the polyamide resin and the polymer performance modifier.

Adiponitrile is made by reacting 3-pentenenitrile with hydrogen cyanide. The 3-pentenenitrile is made by reacting 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide and by isomerizing 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile. The reaction of 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide to produce 3-pentenenitrile also produces small amounts of dinitrile compounds, including adiponitrile (ADN) and methylglutaronitrile (MGN). Methylglutaronitrile is removed to provide an adiponitrile-enriched stream, which is used in a catalyst purification step.

Reheat characteristics of polyethylene and polypropylene resins, including reheating time and resin color, are improved by adding to the resin carbon black with a primary particle size in the range of 200 to 500 nm as an infrared absorber. Thermal carbon blacks having this primary particle size are preferred over Furnace carbon blacks. Injection stretch-blow molded bottles and other thermoformed products are made from resins with carbon black infrared absorber.
