摘要:
The present invention relates to compositions and methods for forming substantially bio-based barrier coatings suitable for application on paper and board substrates, and paper and board substrates on which are applied one or more layers of such substantially bio-based barrier coatings. The inventive bio-based barrier coatings comprise a biowax emulsion comprising one or more biowaxes, such as castor oil wax, formed by hydrogenation of a bio-based oil, such as castor oil. The barrier coating composition is formed by dispersing a biowax emulsion into a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) dispersion, and may be applied as a coating e.g., on paper or board, e.g., those comprised of recycled fibers, using conventional industrial methods at ambient temperatures.

Provided is the use of a film of a cellulose ester as a barrier against moisture and oil. The cellulose ester has free hydroxyl groups and ester substituents. The ester substituents are each individually selected from C1 to C6 alkyl ester groups. The free hydroxyl groups are present in an amount in the range 15% to 40 mol %. The film is useful as a barrier layer for food packaging. Also provided is a composition comprising the cellulose ester and a further film-forming material, a packaging material comprising a film of the composition, and a method for manufacturing the packaging material.

The present invention relates to a paper or paperboard substrate having barrier properties which substrate comprises a first fiber based layer, a second layer comprising micro-fibrillated cellulose, a third layer comprising a heat sealable polymer, and a fourth layer comprising aluminum, aluminum oxide or titanium dioxide. The invention further relates to a process for the production of said substrate and a package formed of said substrate.

Provided are a method for producing a water-soluble cellulose ether having a low degree of polymerization and enhanced whiteness, and the like. The method includes the steps of: bringing a pulp powder having a multiplication product of less than 0.004 mm2 which is obtained by multiplying a number-average fiber length by a number-average fiber width, each measured with a Kajaani fiber length analyzer, into contact with an alkali metal hydroxide to obtain an alkali cellulose; reacting the alkali cellulose with an etherifying agent to obtain a crude water-soluble cellulose ether having a high degree of polymerization; purifying the crude water-soluble cellulose ether; drying the purified water-soluble cellulose ether; grinding the dried water-soluble cellulose ether into a water-soluble cellulose ether powder; and depolymerizing the water-soluble cellulose ether powder to obtain the water-soluble cellulose ether having a low degree of polymerization.

A label assembly including one or more dissolvable thermal direct adhesive labels and methods of assembly and use. According to one embodiment, each label includes a base layer, a thermal direct layer, an adhesive layer, and a barrier layer. The base layer, which has an upper surface and a lower surface, is water-dissolvable and may be made of a water-dissolvable paper. The thermal direct layer is positioned directly over the upper surface of the base layer and functions in the conventional manner to produce markings therein in response to heat. The adhesive layer is water-dissolvable and is positioned below the lower surface of the base layer. The barrier layer, which is positioned directly below the lower surface of the base layer and directly over the adhesive layer, serves to prevent migration of the adhesive layer through the base layer and into contact with the thermal direct layer.

The present invention relates to process for the production of a coated substrate comprising cellulosic fibres, the process comprising the steps of: i) providing a first substrate comprising cellulosic fibres and having a dry content of less than 50%; ii) applying a coating composition to the first substrate in an amount of more than 5 g/m2, calculated as dry weight of the coating composition, wherein the coating composition comprises: microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), and optionally a water retention agent selected from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), anionic polyacrylamide (A-PAM), sodium polyacrylates, polyacrylic acid derivatives, guar gum, alginate, MFC prepared from carboxymethylated fibers, MFC prepared from oxidized fibers, MFC prepared by CMC-functionalised fibers, and/or combinations thereof; and iii) mechanically dewatering the first substrate. The present process provides an energy efficient coating process which can be performed online.

Strong, light-weight composite laminates are made by impregnating layers of paper with a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) slurry, laying the coated papers up in a plurality of layers or stack, and subjecting the stack to pressure and heat for a period of time sufficient to cause the CNF to impregnate, reinforce, and bond the paper layers into a composite. The resulting composite has impressive mechanical strength and exhibits a substantially homogeneous composition throughout its depth. The composite should have good strength to weight properties, and be recyclable or compostable.
