Abstract: A combination of a ship having a hold with a bottom and walls, and a tank, which is circular in horizontal section, for transporting a liquefied gas; said tank having a metal shell having (1) a substantially flat metal bottom (2) a spheroidal section constituting most of the upper part of the tank and (3) a toroidal knuckle portion tangentially joined to the periphery of the metal bottom and tangentially joined to the spheroidal section; load bearing insulation between the ship hold bottom and the tank metal bottom; and a skirt, circular in horizontal section, extending from the tank above the toroidal knuckle portion downwardly to a supporting base in the ship hold.

Abstract: A tanker vessel intended especially for the transport of liquid cargoes at temperatures differing from ambient temperature having external insulation covering the midbody of the vessel. The insulation is secured to the vessel midbody by means of a grid of intersecting frames or firring members attached to the vessel hull with the insulating material being fitted, foamed or sprayed in the lattice spaces defined by the intersecting members. An outer covering or skin may be disposed over the insulation to provide a watertight and abrasion resistant skin that will prevent damage to or deterioration of the external insulation.

A storage for cold liquids (such as liquefied gases) comprises a cavity 10 in the earth having a trench 32 into which the bottom end of a partition 14 is inserted, the trench being filled with water which is frozen to form ice which seals the bottom end of the partition. The partitions 14 may form concentric cylinders defining concentric chambers 16, each of which may be filled with a liquid of lower boiling point than that of the surrounding chamber 16, e.g. from the centre outwards the liquefied gases could be helium, then methane, then ethane, then propane. The lid 18 may be integral with the walls 14 and may have a flange 20 dipping into a trough 22 containing water which is frozen either by the liquid in the chambers 16, or by an additional refrigeration plant. The walls 14 may include heat insulation to minimise heat losses within the structure.

Abstract: 991,384. Storing gases. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. April 21, 1964 [April 27, 1963], No. 16650/63. Heading F4P. Compressed gaseous ozone/oxygen mixture containing up to 13% by weight of ozone is stored under a pressure of e.g. 15 atmospheres in a pressure vessel 11 maintained at a temperature appreciably below ambient temperature by a block of solid carbon dioxide 23, and is internally covered with a thin coherent coating which is relatively inert to ozone. The coherent coating may be a phosphate, sulphate, borate, silicate or oxide layer produced by subjecting the vessel to a chemical bath, or electrolytic treatment. Alternatively, the coating may be alumina sprayed on to the vessel. The vessel 11 is preferably mado of stainless steel provided with a pocket 12 containing the solid carbon dioxide and possibly an inert liquid of low freezing point such as a fluorinated hydrocarbon. The pocket 12 is closed by an insulated stopper 16. The vessel 11 is contained in an outer container 13 and the space therebetween is evacuated and filled with insulating power. In a second construction a plurality of cylindrical pressure vessels connected together by a manifold are arranged in a circle within a double-walled insulated container, the block of carbon dioxide being inserted in the centre of the circle.
