A method for initializing ISDN adapter cards installed within a workstation having a main processor and an ISDN primary adapter for connecting the ISDN adapter cards to an ISDN primary gateway. Each ISDN adapter card has circuits for handling at least one B-channel, and a first processor associated with memory storage. The ISDN primary adapter includes a second processor associated with a second memory storage. In response to the reception of a specific polling pattern transmitted to each adapter card by the primary adapter, a pattern is transmitted to the workstation processor for requesting the loading of the second memory storage with operational code transferred from the workstation to the ISDN adapter card. The ISDN primary adapter, in response to the request pattern received by the main processor, transmits a second pattern via the ISDN adapter card that transmitted the first pattern, so that the main processor in the workstation and the processor in the ISDN primary adapter recognize the ISDN adapter card that transmitted the patterns to the workstation and to the ISDN primary adapter as the master ISDN adapter card for transmission of control information on the D-channel.

This circuit is a trunk type interface circuit which interfaces between duplicate copies of an ISDN system and T-carrier facilities. The circuit is controlled by a digital signal processor which has a 16-bit wide data bus. The digital signal processor is capable of supporting various Zero Byte Time Slot Interchange (ZBTSI) techniques. Also included is an administrative microprocessor which collects data concerning the operation of the trunk circuit and transmits this information to the ISDN system. The administrative microprocessor also receives information from currently unused data bits in the input bit stream from the ISDN system. The trunk circuit includes one receiver which collects and stores data transmitted by the ISDN system. Another receiver collects and stores data transmitted via the T-carrier facilities. The trunk circuit also includes two transmitters. One transmitter converts previously formatted data to T-carrier compatible data and transmits the data via the T-carrier facilities. the other transmitter converts reformatted data received from the T-carrier facility to data compatible with the ISDN format and transmit this data to the ISDN system. The memory of this circuit includes a dual port random access memory which provides for nearly simultaneous access by two separate input/output controllers.

A method for dynamically varying bandwidth of a primary rate ISDN interface includes requesting, over a data (D) channel, allocation of at least one first B channel of the primary rate ISDN interface. When notification of allocation of the first B channel is received, over the D channel, data is sent over the first B channel. A relationship is monitored between a first bandwidth demand parameter and first and second threshold values. If a predetermined relationship exists between the first bandwidth demand parameter and the first threshold value, allocation of at least one second B channel of the primary rate ISDN interface is requested. In response to receiving notification of allocation of the second channel, data is sent over the second B channel. The second B channel is released in response to a relationship between the first bandwidth demand parameter and a second threshold. A hyper primary rate ISDN interface (HPRI) defines a virtual primary rate interface (PRI) that does not include a predetermined number of B channels. A bandwidth user can statically request any number of the available bearer channels. Alternatively, B channels can be dynamically allocated or de-allocated based on demand.

A technique for detecting and responding to a loopback condition on an ISDN PRI of a telecommunications switching system. The technique involves storing the Call Reference Value of the most recently transmitted call SETUP command as the Last Sent CRV. An incoming call SETUP command is considered to have looped back when it is assigned a Call Reference Value identical to the Last Sent CRV, and it requests a PRI channel that is occupied. The PRI is considered to be in a loopback condition after a predetermined number of call SETUP commands have looped back. The PRI can be removed from service while the loopback condition persists.

A primary application for such methods and apparatus is within Data Tandem Switches/Internet Concentrator Switches and End Office Switches with PRI connections for Internet Service Providers. For example, by facilitating a direct connection to a specific B-Channel using the invention, modem pool providers can quickly and efficiently verify the functionality of specific channels and their associated modems, as well as maintain and test other equipment and software associated a specific PRI B-Channel.
