Abstract: Heat engine piston and combustion chamber construction enclosing a gas combustion zone, comprising: a piston body having a crown facing said gas combustion zone; combustion chamber surfaces cooperating with said piston to complete enclosure of said zone; and a thermal diffusivity coating on said crown and combustion chamber surfaces having an effective thickness to operate as a thermal diode to restrict heat transfer to said piston body and combustion chamber and to restrict heat transfer to said combustible charge prior to combustion. A method of thermally managing heat generated by an internal combustion engine, the engine having combustion chamber walls for combusting a gaseous mixture of air and fuel, a cooling jacket for cooling said walls, and a piston moveable along a portion of said walls, comprising: increasing the compression ratio of the engine to induce engine-knock for an uncoated chamber; coating at least the crown of the piston of said combustion chamber walls with a low thermal diffusivity layer that functions as a heat diode to restrict heat transfer in both directions normal to the coating; operating said engine with said coating chamber wall and increased compression ratio, whereby fresh intake of combustible mixture to said combustion chamber will be drawn thereinto at a lower temperature and volumetric efficiency with less heat from said combustion being wasted to said cooling jacket.

Abstract: Fastening devices such as washers, seals and drive pins subject to corrosive deterioration of all or select portions thereof wherein all or such select portions are protected from such corrosion and failure by a thin coating or coatings of hard surface material or materials. In a preferred form, the fastening device is coated with a synthetic diamond material formed as a thin layer in situ thereon. In addition to preventing moisture and other corrosive material from penetrating to the base metal, such synthetic diamond material serves to preserve the surface integrity of the fastening device preventing the formation or spread of surface flaws produced during use or during the fabrication of the fastening device.

Abstract: A diesel engine (10) has a pre-combustion chamber (30) with an angled and tapered transfer passage (60) leading to the main combustion chamber (44). The transfer passage (60) is tapered to provide a larger lower end (62) facing the main chamber (44) and smaller upper end (64) facing the pre-combustion chamber (30). Air passing through the passage (60) during the compression stroke undergoes heating and swirling within the pre-combustion chamber. The piston has an upper surface (46) with recessed lobes (20) and (22) and recessed passage area (28). Each recessed lobe functions as a valve pocket for the respective intake valve (32) and exhaust valve (42). The valve pockets are deep enough to provide sufficient valve lifts to allow valve overlap periods comparable with spark ignition gasoline engines without interfering with the piston upper surface (46).

Abstract: A porous body is formed and joined to the component by sintering a metal powder to the component. The porous body and component are placed into a piston casting die. Molten metal is poured into the die such that the porous body becomes infiltrated with the molten metal and the molten metal is allowed to solidify. Abstract: A ceramic coating for a metal article includes a metallic bond coat deposited on the metal article, at least one MCrAlY/ceramic layer deposited on the bond coat, and a ceramic composite top layer deposited on the MCrAlY/ceramic layer. Abstract: Improvements in gears and gear teeth structures for use in driving assemblies, such as machines, vehicles and the like, wherein the teeth portions of the gears and, in certain instances, other portions thereof, are coated with a hard synthetic diamond material deposited thereagainst as carbon atoms derived from a fluid, such as methane gas, when high energy radiation, such as microwave radiation, is beamed through the gas against the surfaces of the gears and gear teeth thereof. In certain instances, the hard diamond material coating the gear teeth and the spaces therebetween, is overcoated with a thin layer of chromium which serves to protect the diamond surfaces of the teeth during use so as to prevent destruction of the diamond layer by physical attrition caused by stress and abrasive particles engaging the teeth during use of the gears. In a particular form of the invention, two or more gears having their teeth similarly coated with synthetic diamond material are assembled in meshing engagement with each other and a coating of chromium disposed on the outer surfaces of the diamond material coating the teeth serves to lubricate and protect the diamond coating against destruction or attrition as the gears mesh and are driven with respect to each other.

Abstract: Improved structures in bearings operable to receive and support shafts or members which are supported for rotation on shafts or pins are disclosed. In one form, just the inner cylindrical surface of a solid bearing made of metal or hard ceramic material is coated with a synthetic diamond material deposited in situ therein as carbon atoms by means of high energy radiation, which also serves to form synthetic diamond structures of layers of such carbon atoms so deposited. In another form, the entire race of a multiple part bearing is coated with synthetic diamond material. In a third form, a rolling member type bearing, such as a ball or roller bearing, is provided containing an inner race, an outer race, and a plurality of balls, rollers, or other rolling members supported between the inner and outer race. In certain instances, the rolling members are retained by means of a cage supported therebetween. The rolling members, inner and outer races, and, when employed, the cage, are all coated with hard synthetic diamond material deposited in situ thereon as described. Alternatively, select portions of the components of the bearing may be coated to the exclusion of other portions thereof. In all forms, the synthetic diamond material coating may be overcoated with thin layers of chromium, chromium alloys, or similar materials.
