    Abstract: A method and related apparatus for forming a wellbore in a subterranean formation includes forming a drill string that has a drill bit at a distal end, a drilling motor configured to rotate the drill bit with a drive shaft; a joint coupled to the drive shaft; and an actuator assembly displacing the drive shaft between a first and a second deflection angle, the drive shaft being movable at each of the deflection angles until a predetermined weight is applied to the bit. The method also includes conveying the drill bit through the wellbore and fixing the drive shaft in at least one of the first and the second deflection angles by applying a predetermined weight on the bit.

    Abstract: A drilling assembly is tripped in a cased hole to make more open hole. The assembly features retracted scrapers and a closed circulation sub so that the drilling can commence with string pressure delivered to bit nozzles due to the circulation sub being in a closed position. When drilling is done and the bit is to be removed, an object lands on a seat on a sleeve that acts as a piston to break scraper retainers for casing scraping deployment and to open the circulation port. A bypass opens around the seated ball when the sleeve shifts to allow flow around the seated ball for circulation while scraping. Drilling and casing scraping are accomplished in a single trip.

    Abstract: An actively controlled self-adjusting earth-boring tool includes a body carrying cutting elements and an actuation device disposed at least partially within the body. The actuation device may include a first fluid chamber, a second fluid chamber, and a reciprocating member dividing the first fluid chamber from the second fluid chamber. A connection member may be attached to the reciprocating member and may have a drilling or bearing element connected thereto. A first fluid flow path may extend from the second fluid chamber to the first fluid chamber. A second fluid flow path may extend from the first fluid chamber to the second fluid chamber. A rate controller may control a flowrate of a hydraulic fluid through the first and second fluid flow paths. The rate controller may include an electromagnet, and the flowrates of the hydraulic fluid may be adjusted by adjusting fluid properties of the hydraulic fluid.

    Abstract: An electrical submersible well pump assembly includes a rotary pump and a motor. An inner rotor is coupled to the motor shaft. The inner rotor has steel discs stacked together with end caps at each end. The discs have apertures that align to define axially extending slots. Each of the slots has a closed outer wall spaced radially inward from an outer diameter surface of the inner rotor. Inner rotor magnets are located within the slots. Continuous open and thin gaps between rotating components act as hydrodynamic bearings. Damper bars extend axially at points between the outer walls of the slots and the outer diameter surface of the inner rotor. An outer rotor has a bore that receives the inner rotor, the outer rotor being operatively coupled to the pump shaft for rotation therewith. Outer rotor magnets are mounted to the bore of outer rotor.

    Abstract: A releasable production packer employs lock ring segments that are biased radially inwardly for engaging a mating pattern external to the packer mandrel. The mandrel has openings aligned with the segments and a release tool that latches to the mandrel for support and then moves the segments radially outwardly away from engagement with the mandrel so that the slips and sealing elements can extend axially and retract radially. After those movements the packer is retrieved. The release tools moves the locking segments only radially for the maximum mechanical advantage without risk of bending or deforming small parts.

    Abstract: An impregnated bit for forming a wellbore in an earth formation includes a bit body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis. A bit face is located at the distal end and extends between the longitudinal axis and a gage. The bit face comprises at least one blade extending radially outward from the longitudinal axis toward the gage and comprising an outer surface to engage formation material. The outer surface of the at least one blade may extend substantially linearly from a distalmost point of the bit face coincident with the longitudinal axis and at an acute angle relative to a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bit body. The bit face may comprise a first fluid channel extending radially within and across the bit face and a second fluid channel extending radially within and across a portion of the bit face.
