An internal swage fitting for swaging a tube. The fitting includes a tube connection region with one or more radial grooves and an expansion cavity at the end adjacent to the end of the tube to be swaged. The expansion cavity accommodates flowing tube material during the swaging process with minimal axial pressure on the fitting. The expansion cavity also includes a stop wall to fix the location of the tube in the fitting. The expansion cavity enables swaging of tube materials of relatively high ductility without accounting for setback. It therefore eliminates the need for a collar to establish setback during swaging.

A method for manufacturing an engine cradle for use with a vehicular body and frame assembly includes the initial step of selecting desired materials for each of four hollow members that will be secured together to form the engine cradle. The selected materials can include metallic materials, such as steel, aluminum, magnesium, and non-metallic materials, such as fiber and other composites, or any combination thereof. The selected materials are formed into desired shapes using any known method, such as by hydroforming. Then, portions of the four members are disposed in a telescoping relationship with one another, such as by providing protrusions on some of the components and disposing the ends of the other components in a telescoping relationship with such protrusions. Lastly, the telescoping portions of the members are secured together using any securement method, including laser, MIG, or electromagnetic pulse welding techniques and adhesive bonding.

The extended member of the inner component and the outer component are mutually combined together. After the pressing operation the guiding pin is withdrawn.

A tubular nosepiece (16) surrounds the sleeve positioner (40), and extends axially beyond the end surface (78). The mandrel (10) is inserted through the bushing ( 68) while the bushing (68) is within opening (92). The mandrel (10) is moved to place the sleeve (66) within the bushing (68), and an end surface (41) of the nosepiece (16) against a surface portion (84) of the workpiece (88). At the same time, the end surface (43) of a nosepiece extension (39) is positioned against an end surface (82) of the bushing (68). The mandrel (10) is then pulled through the sleeve (66). Movement of the increasing diameter portion (56) and the maximum diameter portion (58) through the sleeve (66) imposes a radially outwardly directed force on the sleeve (66), causing the sleeve (66) to expand. The expanding sleeve (66) exerts a radially outwardly directed force on the bushing (68). In response, the bushing (68) is expanded radially into a secure interference fit within the opening (92) in the workpiece (88).
