Abstract: A collection, charging and distribution machine collects, charges and distributes portable electrical energy storage devices (e.g., batteries, super- or ultracapacitors). To charge, the machine employs electrical current from an external source, such as the electrical grid or an electrical service of an installation location. The machine determines a first number of devices to be rapidly charged, employing charge from a second number of devices identified to sacrifice charge. Thus, some devices may be concurrently charged via current from the electrical service and current from other devices, to achieve rapid charging of some subset of devices. The devices that sacrifice charge may later be charged. Such may ensure availability of devices for end users.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a hub apparatus and associated charging systems. In some embodiments, the hub apparatus includes (1) a housing assembly defining an internal space; (2) a shaft positioned to extend through the housing assembly; (3) a stator assembly fixedly coupled to the shaft; (4) a side cover fixedly coupled to the shaft and rotatably coupled to the housing assembly, the side cover having a base portion and a mating portion extending from the base portion; and (5) a pair of first connectors positioned through the mating portion. Each of the first connectors comprising a terminal end and a contact portion. The terminal end is electrically coupled to a battery assembly via a wire bundle fixedly coupled to the side cover. The contact portion is configured to electrically couple to an external power source so as to charge the battery assembly through a wired connection.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to apparatuses/systems and associated methods for controlling an environmental condition inside a container or housing. The apparatus includes (1) a thermoelectric cooling unit having a first side facing away from an inner surface of the housing and a second side facing the inner surface of the housing; (2) a capillary unit having a first part and a second part; and (3) a sensor positioned inside the housing and configured to sense a humidity value and a temperature value inside the housing. The first part is coupled to the thermoelectric cooling unit and is positioned inside the housing. The second part is positioned outside the housing. If the humidity value is greater than a humidity threshold and the temperature value is greater than a temperature threshold, the thermoelectric cooling unit removes moisture in the housing, and the first part of the capillary unit collects the removed moisture and transmits the removed moisture to the second part of the capillary unit.

Abstract: A two-way distribution, charging, and vending system permits a subscriber to exchange one or more partially or completely discharged portable electric energy storage devices for a comparable number of charged portable electric energy storage devices. The two-way distribution, charging, and vending system includes a number of charging modules, each with a dedicated power converter, communicably coupled to at least one two-way distribution system controller and to a power distribution grid. Upon receipt of a discharged portable electric energy storage device, the at least one two-way distribution system controller validates a manufacturer identifier and a subscriber identifier stored in a nontransitory storage media carried by the discharged portable electric energy storage device. Responsive to a successful authentication and validation, the at least one two-way distribution system controller dispenses a charged portable electric energy storage device to the subscriber.

Abstract: A network of collection, charging and distribution machines collect, charge and distribute portable electrical energy storage devices (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors or ultracapacitors). To charge, the machines employ electrical current from an external source, such as the electrical grid or an electrical service of an installation location. By default, each portable electrical energy storage device is disabled from accepting a charge unless it receives authentication information from an authorized collection, charging and distribution machine, other authorized charging device, or other authorized device that transmits the authentication credentials. Also, by default, each portable electrical energy storage device is disabled from releasing energy unless it receives authentication information from an external device to which it will provide power, such as a vehicle or other authorization device.

Abstract: Electrical energy storage device for powering portable devices such as vehicles or consumer electronics includes barriers to minimize migration of thermal energy and propagation of combustion in the rare event that electrical energy storage cells fail, burst and ignite. A burst structure is provided to vent gas from the device in a desired direction in the event pressure within the device exceeds a maximum value. Biased vents permit gases emanating from a portable electrical energy storage cell within an electrical energy storage module to escape and isolate other electrical energy storage cells from the gases.
