摘要: A system for monitoring the tread of a shoe includes a frame member, a waveguide structured to support the shoe when an outer sole of shoe is in contact with a surface of the waveguide, a light source structured to provide light within an edge of the waveguide such that the light will be internally reflected within the waveguide, and an imaging device structured and configured to generate an image of the outer sole of the shoe when the outer sole of shoe is in contact with the waveguide and the light is being provided within the waveguide. The system also includes a controller structured and configured to: (i) receive image data based on the image of the outer sole; (ii) determine from the image data a largest worn region size for the shoe; and (iii) determine a slip risk for the shoe based on the largest worn region size.

摘要: The invention relates to biodegradable iron alloy-containing compositions for use in preparing medical devices. In addition, biodegradable crystalline and amorphous compositions of the invention exhibit properties that make them suitable for use as medical devices for implantation into a body of a patient. The compositions include elemental iron and one or more elements selected from manganese, magnesium, zirconium, zinc and calcium. The compositions can be prepared using a high energy milling technique. The resulting compositions and the devices formed therefrom are useful in various surgical procedures, such as but not limited to orthopedic, craniofacial and cardiovascular.

摘要: Neuroprotective peptides derived from the voltage-gated potassium channel Kv2.2 are described. The peptides promote dispersal of the cognate channel Kv2.1 in neurons, thereby blocking pro-apoptotic potassium efflux, and preserving cell viability after apoptotic injury. Methods of preventing and treating neuronal damage, such as neuronal damage following ischemic stroke, by administering the neuroprotective peptides are described. Fusion of the neuroprotective peptides to a cell-penetrating peptide to promote cellular uptake is also described.

摘要: Electrodes providing excellent recording and physical stability. Electrodes are disclosed that may include a plurality of small teeth that possess a novel design shape and orientation. The shallow and relatively long teeth run parallel to the rim of the electrode that presses against the patient's skin. When the electrode is twisted onto skin, the tiny teeth penetrate the stratum corneum and move nearly horizontally under the stratum corneum, thus anchoring the electrode securely to the skin. The electrodes cause minimal discomfort to the patient since the small teeth do not extend to the pain fibers which are located in deeper layers of the skin. The electrodes may be fabricated in a variety of geometries including cylindrical, disk, and blunt bullet or top shapes. In some instances, the electrodes may be connected to detachable leads having magnetic properties.

摘要: The invention relates to Chevrel-phase materials and methods of preparing these materials utilizing a precursor approach. The Chevrel-phase materials are useful in assembling electrodes, e.g., cathodes, for use in electrochemical cells, such as rechargeable batteries. The Chevrel-phase materials have a general formula of Mo6Z8 (Z=sulfur) or Mo6Z18-yZ2y (Z1=sulfur; Z2=selenium), and partially cuprated Cu1Mo6S8 as well as partially de-cuprated Cu1-xMgxMo6S8 and the precursors have a general formula of MxMo6Z8 or MxMo6Z18-yZ2y, M=Cu. The cathode containing the Chevrel-phase material in accordance with the invention can be combined with a magnesium-containing anode and an electrolyte.

摘要: A method of analyzing instructor discourse includes recording an audio signal representing speech of the instructor during a class session, converting the audio signal to a session transcript comprising speech data for the session using an automatic speech recognition tool and segmenting the transcript into utterances, extracting a set of features from the session transcript, filtering student talk out from the utterances, analyzing a first subset of the features to produce a number of local context predictions for each utterance of the session transcript, analyzing a second subset of the features to produce a number of global context predictions for the session transcript, and combining a subset of the number of local context predictions and the number of global context predictions into a classification that attends to differential reliability.
