    摘要: An iterative decoder is controlled to iteratively decode a block by performing one or more decoding iterations for the block during a predetermined block time. The iterative decoder is further controlled to perform more decoding iterations for the block during a time in which the hardware of the iterative decoder is available, if the block fails to converge to correct data during the predetermined block time. The iterative decoder uses a parity-check matrix and can be configured to process that parity-check matrix for parallel, sequential or a combination of parallel and sequential (“hybrid”) parity constraint updates.

    摘要: A new class of fixed partial response targets are disclosed for use in a PRML magnetic medium read channel. The preferred embodiment exhibits an equalization response characterized by the polynomial 7+4*D−4*D2−5*D3−2*D4, where D represents the unit delay operator. This read channel target provides improved matching to the inherent magnetic channel over the known canonical class of targets (1−D)(1+D){circumflex over ( )}N, and thereby reduces equalization losses. The improved spectral matching reduces amplification of noise in the channel, thereby reducing bit-error-rates. The new class of targets also exhibits a spectral null at DC, reducing problems for offset cancellation circuitry and making the disk drive less sensitive to thermal asperities. It also exhibits a spectral depression rather than a spectral null at the Nyquist frequency, making quasi-catastrophic error sequences virtually impossible. The new class of target simplifies coding and allows RLL code ratios that approach unity, improving effective recording densities, while significantly reducing BER.

    摘要: In a particular embodiment, a channel detector is disclosed that includes a programmable look-up table (LUT) to relate user bits to channel bits. The programmable LUT is adapted to be implemented on a state trellis of arbitrary radix. The sectional precoder is adapted to map channel bits to user bits and vice versa using a programmable LUT.

    摘要: A nominal reference read operation compares analog voltages of the memory cells to at least one nominal reference voltage. A shifted reference read operation compares the analog voltages of the memory cells to at least one shifted reference voltage that is shifted from the nominal reference voltage to compensate for an expected change in the analog voltages of the memory cells. Data stored in the memory cells is decoded by a first decoding process that uses the information from either the nominal reference read operation or the shifted reference read operation. The data stored in the memory cells is decoded by a second decoding process that uses the information from both the nominal reference read operation and the shifted reference read operation.
