An aperture antenna suitable for a radar system of an automotive vehicle is provided which includes three or more primary radiators and a feeding circuit. The feeding circuit is designed to supply electromagnetic signals to adjacent two of the primary radiators through discrete feeders to radiate in phase electromagnetic waves and to extract signals received by the two of the primary radiators separately. This enables the radiation of radar waves over a wider area without increasing the radiation power.

The microcomputers each have a ROM and a RAM and are used to control different systems provided in the vehicle. The ROM of the second microcomputer stores an operational program which can be used to calculate control values for controlling various types of devices. It also stores operational map data which can be used to calculate control values for controlling various types of devices. Various signals output by the sensors provided in the vehicle are supplied to both microcomputers. At the start of the power supply to the apparatus, the operational map data stored in the ROM of the first microcomputer, which is to be used by the second microcomputer, is transferred to the RAM of the second microcomputer. The second microcomputer calculates a control value from the transferred operational map data, the signals output by the sensors and other data, thereby controlling the system assigned to it.

In a knocking discriminating system for an internal combustion engine, a knocking detecting signal obtained from a knocking sensor is passed through a band-pass filter for obtaining a sinusoidal waveform of approximately 8 KHz. The sinusoidal waveform signal is then applied to an A/D converter, the operational timing of which is controlled by a microcomputer, so that only a part of the knocking detecting signal nearby the peak portion is converted into digital values. A discrimination level is prepared from the average value of the digital values, and the knocking status is discriminated by comparing the maximum value of the digital values thus converted with the discriminating level.

A spark-ignition timing of the internal combustion engine is normally set at an MBT (minimum spark advance for best torque). However, when a knocking of the engine is detected by a vibration sensor fixed to the engine, the ignition timing is retarded with respect to the MBT by an angle corresponding to either a non-knocking limit retard angle or a maximum retard angle determined by engine operating conditions whichever is smaller.
