An apparatus for producing an ignition spark in an internal combustion engine. The apparatus comprises an inductive ignition device having a primary coil and a secondary coil, flow of current through the primary coil being controlled by an electronic switching element (e.g., a transistor) responsive to a triggering signal. A rotatable body (e.g., the engine flywheel) having detectable features on a periphery thereof is also provided. A sensor device is located adjacent to the rotatable body at a fixed position and is operative to produce an output in response to the detectable features. The apparatus also includes a controller operative to receive an output from the sensor device and responsively produce the triggering signal so as to have a selected dwell time and ignition position.

A magneto ignition system includes a rotating magnet driven past a primary winding for firing the engine. The magneto generates a speed dependent signal having a following current pulse and a leading current pulse of a smaller amplitude than the following pulse. A Darlington power transistor has a collector connected in series with a voltage dropping resistor or diode to the winding. A resistor bias circuit connects the primary winding to the input of the power transistor. A cut-off transistor is connected to by-pass the bias circuit of the Darlington power transistor and thereby generate a pulse in the primary winding. A timing capacitor is connected to the primary winding in series with a diode and charging resistor. A control transistor has its input circuit connected between the timing capacitor and the resistors of the bias circuit. The control transistor responds to the differential of the bias circuit voltage and the capacitor voltage, whereby the control transistor drives the cut-off transistor to turn off the power transistor during the decreasing side of the winding circuit after it peaks at starting and low speeds and progressively increases with a gradual advance during the starting speed range, and includes a maximum advance established prior to the peak current value.

In an ignition system for an internal combustion engine, a signal generator generates a given ac signal in synchronism with the rotation of the engine and a waveform reshaping circuit reshapes the waveform of the ac signal from the signal generator thus generating a pulse signal. An ignition timing control circuit is responsive to the pulse signal from the waveform reshaping circuit to control the timing of ignition of an ignition coil in which a primary current is switched on and off in accordance with the pulse signal.

An ignition system transducer comprising a ferro-magnetic disc mounted on a distributor shaft and having four pairs of protuberances, the spacing of the two protuberances of each pair corresponding to the maximum and minimum spark advance positions. Rotation of the protuberances about the distributor shaft is detected by a first variable reluctance pick-up mounted in a fixed position, and by a second variable reluctance pickup movable in accordance with an engine load sensor. These two pick-ups in conjunction with signal generators produced a fixed phase waveform, and a variable phase waveform which varies in accordance with engine load.

A speed-dependent ignition controller and method utilizes a sensor output signal to provide spark occurrence and dwell initiation at retard and advance angles for an internal combustion engine. The sensor signal has a pulse width proportional to the difference between a desired ignition advance and retard angle. At low rpm, the sensor signal is inverted to produce a retarded ignition angle while at high rpm's the signal is utilized without inversion to produce an advance ignition angle.

A function timing circuit responsive to both waveforms calculates engine speed, engine load and crank-shaft position and from these produces a trigger signal for each ignition spark. Further circuitry responsive to the trigger signals drives the ignition coil.

Disclosed herein is a capacitor discharge ignition system adapted for use with an internal combustion engine and comprising a charge capacitor, an ignition coil primary winding, an ignition SCR, and a spark retard circuit connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR. The spark retard circuit comprises a thyristor having an anode-cathode path connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR, an RC delay network including a capacitor and a resistor with a junction therebetween, the network having one end connected to the thyristor anode and having an opposite end connected to the thyristor gate, and a zener diode connected between the thyristor gate and the RC delay network junction for selectively preventing full discharge of the capacitor through the primary winding for a predetermined period of time after the ignition SCR is rendered conductive, thereby allowing for over advancing at mid rpm range and providing for automatic spark retard at higher engine rpm. In one embodiment of the invention a potentiometer replaces the resistor in the RC delay network to allow for further adjustment of ignition spark timing.

In order to diminish the lurching which occurs when automatic transmissions of motor vehicles perform gear changes, the invention describes apparatus for gradual changes of the engine torque at or near the onset of the gear change as well as at or near the time of gear reengagement. The engine torque may be changed by altering the fuel metering characteristics and/or the ignition timing in a gradual and controlled manner.
