The present invention provides a catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide compounds with ammonia comprising a composition of one or more pillared interlayered clays, one or more metal ions exchanged with the pillared interlayered clays, and one or more promoter ions exchanged with the pillared interlayered clays. Specifically, the pillared interlayered clay (PILC) catalysts of the present invention include Fe3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ exchanged Al2O3-PILC, TiO2-PILC, ZrO2-PILC or SiO2-PILC catalysts. The promoters include Ce, La, Pr, Th and Nd. These pillared clay catalysts of the present invention show remarkable activity for the SCR reaction.

Pillared clay catalysts for converting heavy oil or residual feedstock into maximum ethylene, propylene and butylene products comprises 30-75 wt % special pillared clays prepared by aluminum pillaring agents of high alkaline degree, 10-40 wt % inorganic oxide bonding agents, 0-30 wt % ZRP series high silicon zeolites with pentasil structure or Y-type zeolites, 0-10 wt % modified compositions of Mg, Al, K, P, Sn and polyethylene gycol, or 0-50 wt % Kaolinite matrix. The catalysts are prepared by mixing slurries, spray drying to form microspheric shapes, pillaring reaction and adding modified components. The catalysts have high catalytic activities, good light olefin selectivities and attrition resistance index. The products are suitable to be used as catalysts for hydrocarbon conversion, including CPP-catalyst for catalytic pyrolysis processes to convert heavy oil into ethylene and propylene, MIO-catalyst for yielding more isobutene and isoamylene products, and FCC-catalyst for yielding more gasoline and light cycle oil from heavy oil or residual feedstock, and also as adsorbents or catalyst carriers.

A neutral templating route to mesoporous molecular sieves based on H-bonding and self-assembly between neutral primary amine or diamine surfactants (S°) and neutral inorganic precursors (I°) has been used to prepare hexagonal and lamellar mesoporous silicas with site isolated transition metal centers. This templating approach allows for the preparation of hexagonal or hexagonal-like mesoporous oxidation catalysts with large framework wall thickness of at least about 17 Å, small elementary particle size (≦400 Å), and unique combinations of framework-confined mesopores and textural mesopores while at the same time providing for facile recovery of the neutral template by simple solvent extraction. The templating of neutral metallosilicate precursors (I°) with neutral diamine surfactants (S°—S°) affords thermally stable pillared lamellar metallosilicates exhibiting complementary framework-confined microporosity and textural mesoporosity while at the same time also providing for template recovery by solvent extraction. In addition, a hexagonal transition metal-substituted catalysts, analogous to MCM-41, have been prepared using the mediated S+X·I+ templating pathway (Pathway 3) and mild reaction conditions. These new mesoporous metallosilicate molecular sieves exhibit exceptional catalytic activity for peroxide hydroxylation of benzene and oxidation of substituted aromatics with kinetic diameters that are too large (larger than 6 Å) to access the pore structure of the conventional microporous transition metal-substituted molecular sieves such as titano- and vanadosilicates.

Novel pillared clay compositions have been synthesized. The clay contains pillars which are at least partially fluorided. These pillars are metal fluoro hydroxy cations where the metal can be Al, Zr, Si/Al, Ti or Cr. The clays which can be pillared with these pillars are the smectite clays which include hectorite and beidellite along with synthetically prepared smectite clays. These clays are prepared by pillaring the clay, followed by calcination and then treatment with a fluoride salt such as ammonium bifluoride. Finally, these fluorided pillared clays find applications in hydrocarbon conversion processes such as alkylation.
