Aluminum alloy sheet is provided with a primer layer comprising a reaction product of aluminum oxide or hydroxide and a vinylphosphonic acid-acrylic acid copolymer, coated with a polymer coating composition containing polyvinyl chloride or an epoxy. The polymer coated aluminum alloy sheet is shaped into container bodies for food containers or container end panels for aluminum food and beverage containers.

This invention relates to a polymerizable phosphazene derivative with a general structural formula.brket open-st.NP(A).sub.a (B).sub.b).brket close-st..sub.xwherein the groups A and B are bonded to phosphorus atoms through --O--, --S--, --NH--, or --NR-- (with R=C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl), and wherein A stands more precisely for a vinyl ether group or a styrene ether group, and B stands more precisely for a hydrocarbon group. The invention also relates to procedures for synthesizing such phosphazene derivatives. The phosphazenes derivatives of the invention can be cured by a process that is initiated cationically, which leads to a large number of advantages. The phosphazene derivatives of the invention can, in particular, be used as curable binders for paints, coatings, fillers, mastics, adhesives, moldings, or films. Paints or coatings comprising the phosphazene derivatives of the invention show especially high mechanical resistance and scratch resistance.

The invention is (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl acrylate, (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl methacrylate or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt thereof.In another aspect, the invention is a polymeric composition which comprises the reaction product of:(a) between about 0.5 and 100 percent by weight of a (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl acrylate, (hydroxy)-phosphinylalkyl methacrylate or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt thereof; and(b) between about 0 and 99.5 weight percent of a compound containing a polymerizable 1,2-ethylenically unsaturated moiety.

A curable coating composition comprising the reaction product of at least one unsaturated polyaryloxyphosphazene, at least one unsaturated aryloxycyclotriphosphazene, and a crosslinking agent is disclosed. In one embodiment, the coating composition is suitable for use as a cigarette burn resistant wear layer coating for thermoplastic floor coverings.

A flame retardant composition comprises the following components: (a) a polymer latex comprising (i) a bis(hydrocarbyl)vinyl phosphonate, preferably bis( Beta chloroethyl)vinyl phosphonate, (ii) a vinyl halide or vinylidene halide such as vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride, (iii) an alkyl acrylate and optionally, (iv) another derivative of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid; (b) a phosphorus source selected from (i) a co-condensate of bis( Beta -chloroethyl)vinyl phosphonate and dimethyl methyl phosphonate or a condensate of bis( Beta chloroethyl) vinyl phosphonate, (ii) tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium halide or hydroxide, (iii) N-hydroxymethyl-3(dimethylphosphoro) propionamide, (iv) tris(2,3-dibromopropyl phosphate), (v) water-insoluble ammonium polyphosphate and (vi) water-insoluble ammonium salt of metaphosphoroamidic acid; (c) urea; (d) an aminoplast selected from a melamine formaldehyde or urea formaldehyde; and (e) optionally, a phosphate plasticizer. These compositions are useful as binders, saturants, impregnants and coatings for flammable materials.
