A method produces a biphenyl derivative, with an industrially high yield and excellent productivity, by use of a raw material which is low in cost and toxicity. The method for producing the biphenyl derivative represented by Formula (1) is characterized in that a chlorine atom in a benzene derivative represented by Formula (2) reacts with magnesium metal to convert the benzene derivative into a Grignard reagent, and then the Grignard reagent is subjected to a coupling reaction in the presence of a catalyst and a dichloropropane: (wherein A represents at least one selected from alkyl groups, alkoxy groups, alkoxymethyl groups, a vinyl group, phenyl groups and chlorine, and n represents an integer of 1 to 4).

This invention relates to new photoacid generator compounds and photoresist compositions that comprise such compounds. In particular, the invention relates to photoacid generator compounds that generate an α,α-difluoroalkyl sulfonic acid upon exposure to activating radiation. Positive- and negative-acting chemically amplified resists that contain such PAGs are particularly preferred. The invention also includes methods for synthesis of such PAGs and α,α-difluoroalkyl sulfonic acids.

A novel and efficient synthetic route is proposed for the preparation of (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate as a sex pheromone compound used for population control of the pest insects belonging to the genus of Spodoptera via an intermediate 1-halo-(Z,E)-7,10-dodecadiene, which is a novel compound not known in the prior art. This novel compound is synthesized by reacting a Grignard reagent XMgC.tbd.C(CH.sub.2).sub.6 X,X being Cl or Br, with (E)-2-butenyl chloride or bromide to form an ene-yne compound of the formula CH.sub.3 CH.dbd..sup.(E) CHCH.sub.2 C.tbd.C(CH.sub.2).sub.6 X and then partially hydrogenating this ene-yne compound.

The invention provides a novel and efficient method for the synthetic preparation of cis-nonen-6-yl chloride which is a useful intermediate compound for the syntheses of, for example, cis-nonen-6-yl acetate, cis-nonen-6-ol, cis-nonen-6-al and the like as flavors as well as cis-dodecen-9-yl acetate and cis-tetradecen-11-yl acetate known as sexual pheromone compounds of several noxious insects. The inventive method comprises reacting 1-bromo-3-chloropropane with the Grignard reagent of cis-hexen-3-yl chloride which is a chlorination product of cis-hexen-3-ol known by a trivial name of leaf alcohol. The reaction is preferably carried out in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a catalyst which may be lithium copper dichloride or dilithium copper tetrachloride at 0.degree. to 40.degree. C.

A novel compound cis-6-undecene-1-chloride is prepared by reacting cis-3-octene-1-chloride with metallic magnesium to give a Grignard reagent of the chloride and then reacting the Grignard reagent with 1-bromo-3-chloropropane in the presence of a lithium copper chloride as a catalyst. The inventive compound is a useful intermediate compound for the synthetic preparation of several kinds of so-called sexual pheromone compounds of noxious insects. As an example of such sexual pheromone compounds, the synthetic preparation of cis-9-tetradecenyl acetate is described.
