An apparatus and method for recovering constituents and/or heat energy from a fluidized bed combustion process utilizes a single vessel which combines a combustor for fluidized bed combustion of a chemical mixture fed therein and a heat exchange section. Characteristics of the fluidized bed are controlled by withdrawing an appropriate portion of the larger, unburned constituent particles from the bottom of the combustor, and smaller constituent particles are withdrawn by becoming entrained within the gases of combustion and being transported to the heat exchange section. The smaller particles are separated from the gases without the use of a cyclone separator and accumulate as another fluidized bed in the heat exchange section where heat is adsorbed from the particles for recovery purposes and to cool the particles. A portion of the cooled particles is then recirculated to the combustor by, for example, pneumatic transport methods for controlling the operating temperature of the combustion process. The apparatus is particularly well-suited for recovering process salts and heat energy from the burning of black liquor effluent from a lignocellulosic pulping process.

A fuel reactor particularly adopted for the efficient combustion of wood and wood-product fuels includes a core comprised of an inner fuel tube and an outer gas tube. Fuel is introduced into one end of the fuel tube and the combustion process is initiated. Perforations in the gas tube allow the combustion gas to progress down the fuel tube and combine with air in the gas tube. A high temperature is maintained on the gas tube to enhance the combustion process. In addition, high temperature-high pressure steam and air are introduced into the core to increase the reactivity rate of char products. The high temperature-high pressure steam is produced by a novel steam pump. The combustion gases are further processed through a gas dispersion chamber, including dispersion plates, and a gas expansion chamber. Heat is extracted from the combustion gases via a novel heat exchanger which includes a gas dispersion shelf, a radiating heat exchanger plate, a primary heat exchanger, and a condensing heat exchanger. A reheater chamber assures positive gas flow through the reactor and out a stack.

The invention comprising an organic waste fuel combustion and tempering gas flow control system integrated with a gas turbine combined cycle steam generating plant. The gas turbine exhaust, wherein the oxygen content is partially consumed is used to dry and support combustion of an organic fuel high in moisture content after said fuel has been dewatered and pelletized. A portion of the gas turbine exhaust gas stream dries the pelletized waste fuel while a parallel portion of the gas turbine hot gas stream is used to support combustion and furnish oxygen in the ignition zone of the pelletized waste combustor. The drying stream also tempers secondary combustion gas temperature. The two gas streams are combined downstream of the combustion zone. The regenerated combined stream is then utilized in a steam generating section to generate steam. The gas turbine exhaust flow provides the mass flow and heat required for drying and combusting the pelletized waste fuel and the heat input from the pellet firing system regenerates the gas turbine exhaust gas stream. The pellet combustion process is maintained at temperature levels which avoid formation of deleterious products of combustion during the incineration process.

A pyrolysis reactor is coupled with an incinerator plant in the pyrolysis apparatus of our invention. In one variant the pyrolysis gas arrives directly in the furnace of the incinerator plant. In another variant the pyrolysis gas is burned in an additional separate combustion chamber and the flue gas arising from its combustion is fed into the flue gas duct of the incinerator. Because of that the units required in an economically self sufficient pyrolysis plant for purifying and using the pyrolysis gas and for the exhaust gas cleaning are made more economical. A process for consuming waste according to our invention is also described.

A system for utilizing a fuel having a high ash content, water content in excess of 50% and large particles of combustibles is shown which includes a holding tank for the fuel. Fuel is circulated in the holding tank to maintain the consistency of the fuel and a metered portion is removed, strained and fed to a combustion device. The combustion device is a fire tube boiler for generating steam and includes a furnace tube insulated with refractory material extending for its entire length. The system mixes a preselected amount of atomized fuel with combustion air and natural gas. Special ash and particulate accumulation means are provided in the boiler. The boiler also has a water spraying system in its combustion chamber to reduce combustion temperature and increases water content of the combustion mixture based on the temperature of the combustion gases at the end of the furnace tube. Finally, when the boiler is shut off, the entire system, including a bypass system, may be purged by air or water.

Waste conversion system with a low-temperature carbonizing chamber heated by flue gases and with a gas purification plant, in which, for removing problematic substances, the low-temperature carbonizing chamber is heated by flue gases of a high-temperature melting chamber which is supplied with, in particular, liquid wastes. The flue gases, after leaving the low-temperature carbonizing chamber, are conducted to the gas purification plant. The low-temperature carbonizing gases are conducted into the melting chamber.
