Abstract:
Described is a process for preparing hydrogenated derivatives of 2,6,6-trimethyl cyclohexene derivatives by means of treating said derivatives with hydrogen in the presence of a supported palladium catalyst such as palladium-on-calcium carbonate or palladium-on-barium sulfate in the presence of a quinoline activator. The resulting products are useful for their organoleptic properties as foodstuff flavorants and flavor enhancers, perfume composition ingredients, perfumed article ingredients and tobacco flavorants and flavor enhancers.

Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma of a solid or liquid anionic, cationic, or nonionic detergent comprising the step of intimately admixing with a solid or liquid anionic, cationic or nonionic detergent base an aroma augmenting or enhancing quantity of at least one indane alkanol or tricyclic isochroman having the structure ##STR1## wherein X is hydrogen, methyl or --CH.sub.2 --; the dashed line is either a carbon-carbon single bond or no bond; R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl; R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent hydrogen, methyl or isopropyl; with the proviso that R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are methyl when R.sub.4 is hydrogen and R.sub.5 is isopropyl or R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent methyl when R.sub.2 is hydrogen and R.sub.3 is isopropyl; and with the further proviso that the dashed line is a carbon-carbon single bond when X is --CH.sub.2 -- and the dashed line is no bond when X is hydrogen or CH.sub.3.
Abstract:
Processes and compositions are described for the use in foodstuffs, chewing gum, toothpaste and medicinal product flavor and aroma augmenting, modifying, enhancing and imparting compositions and as foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste and medicinal product aroma imparting materials of cylic acetals of 2-methyl-2-pentenal having the generic structure: ##STR1## wherein R represents either hydrogen or methyl and the wavy lines signify that the cyclic acetal moiety is in either a "cis" or "trans" configuration with respect to the ethyl moiety bonded to the ethylenic moiety of the molecule. Addition of one or more cyclic acetals of 2-methyl-2-pentenal to foodstuffs, chewing gums, toothpastes and/or medicinal products produces sweet, fruity, gooseberry, green, aniseed, licorice, floral and herbal aroma characteristics and sweet, fruity, gooseberry, green, spearmint-like, aniseed, licorice, floral and herbal flavor characteristics with albedo-like flavor nuances.
Abstract:
Described is the use of a mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol or dihydro caryophyllene alcohol including 10,10-dimethyl-2,6-dimethylene bicyclo(7.2.0)undecan-5-ol in augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of smoking tobacco, smoking tobacco articles and smoking tobacco flavors. The mixture of isomers of caryophyllene alcohol and dihydro caryophyllene alcohol are prepared by isomerizing caryophyllene oxide or dihydro caryophyllene oxide using an aluminum isopropylate catalyst and a toluene solvent at temperatures in the range of from about 100.degree. C. up to about 150.degree. C.
Abstract:
Processes and compositions are described for use in foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste and medicinal product flavor and aroma, smoking tobacco flavor and aroma and perfume and perfumed article aroma augmenting, enhancing and imparting compositions; and as foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste, medicinal product, smoking tobacco, perfume and perfumed article aroma and/or flavor imparting materials of 2,6,6-trimethyl-.alpha.-(iso)propenyl-1-cyclohexene-1-methanol and -1,3-cyclohexadiene-1-methanol derivatives or one or more of their geometric or stereoisomers as defined by the generic structure: ##STR1## wherein one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 or R.sub.3 is methyl and the other two of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represents hydrogen; the dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond or a carbon-carbon single bond; with the proviso that when R.sub.1 is hydrogen, the dashed line is a carbon-carbon double bond.Addition of one or more of the 2,6,6-trimethyl-.alpha.-(iso)propenyl-1-cyclohexene-1-methanols or -1,3-cyclohexadiene-1-methanols of our invention to consumable materials is indicated to produce:A. In foodstuffs, chewing gums, toothpastes and medicinal products, sweet, camphoraceous, damascenone, raspberry-like, raspberry juice-like, rosey, woody/ionone-like, oriental, tobacco-like, tea-like, grape-like, fruity and ionone-like aromas and flavor notes;B. In perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles, leathery, hay, woody, mustard, minty, spicey (clove) and pulegone-like aromas and hay/tobacco and honey ionone-like topnotes with safronal-like nuances; andC. In tobaccos and tobacco flavors, a sweet-musty, hay-tobacco-like, fruity-raspberry, ionone-like aroma prior to smoking and a fruity tobacco-like, Virginia tobacco-like aroma on smoking both in the main stream and in the side stream.
