Abstract:
An improved method for performing phototherapy. The method comprises a step of applying a supplement to the patient before/after light treatment, which produces nitric oxide in the subject biological tissue to be treated. The nitric oxide serves as signaling molecules to cause vasodilatation and increase blood flow and micro-circulation in the biological tissue so as to enhance the effect and reduce the required treatment time of phototherapy.

A medical laser apparatus with a beam homogenizer for producing a uniform output beam profile. The beam homogenizer comprises a light pipe which expands the laser beam and mixes the laser light through total internal reflection as well as an optical diffuser to provide further control of the intensity distribution of the laser beam.
Abstract:
A surgical apparatus for ablation, incision, and/or coagulation of biological tissue, the surgical apparatus comprising: at least one high intensity light emitting diode (LED) light source for producing a light beam with high power density; and an optical system for delivering said light beam to be absorbed by the biological tissue. The power density of the light beam is above a predetermined threshold level to increase a temperature of the biological tissue and cause a transformation for at least one constituent of the biological tissue for ablation, incision, and/or coagulation of the biological tissue.

A Raman spectroscopic apparatus utilizing a broad stripe semiconductor laser as the excitation light source is provided. The output spectrum of the semiconductor laser is narrowed and stabilized by an internal grating to provide high spectral brightness. A high throughput optical system is also disclosed for Raman scattering signal excitation and extraction, which takes full advantage of the high spectral brightness of the laser source.
Abstract:
There is provided a phototherapy apparatus, in which the therapeutic light is delivered through or in proximity to one or more massage components. The massage component provides mechanical massage to the subject biological tissue and modifies the properties of the subject tissue in thickness, density, etc. to facilitate the absorption of the therapeutic light and enhance the effect of the phototherapy procedure.
Abstract:
A laser protection device that can stay tightly on an animal by going over its head and eyes using a flexible material such as nylon. The device has polymer or glass windows that are designed to block or attenuate the treatment light in order to protect the eyes of the animal from laser damage. As an integral feature, the windows are partially transparent in the visible spectrum to allow the animal to see its surroundings.
Abstract:
A quickly deployable and reconfigurable light emitting diode (LED) lighting apparatus with high output intensity and precisely controlled beam property is disclosed for navigational aids. The lighting apparatus comprises an array of high intensity LED units with their light beams individually controlled by secondary optical systems. The transformed light beams mix in a pre-determined manner to produce an illumination pattern with desired intensity distribution. The LED lighting apparatus may further comprise a micro-controller, a plurality of sensor elements, and a wireless transceiver for remote monitoring and control. The lighting apparatus can be powered by rechargeable batteries for temporary or semi-permanent lighting. It can also be powered by standard power lines for permanent lighting.
Abstract:
A Fourier Transform (FT) spectrometer apparatus uses multi-element MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) or D-MEMS (Diffractive Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) devices. A polychromatic light source is first diffracted or refracted by a dispersive component such as a grating or prism. The dispersed beam is intersected by a multi-element MEMS apparatus. The MEMS apparatus encodes each spectral component thereof with different time varying modulation through corresponding MEMS element. The light radiation is then spectrally recombined as a single beam. The beam is further split into to a reference beam and a probe beam. The probe light is directed to a sample and then the transmitted or reflected light is collected. Both the reference beam and probe beam are detected by a photo-detector. The detected time varying signal is analyzed by Fourier transformation to resolve the spectral components of the sample under measurement.
Abstract:
A light emitting panel is disclosed for medical applications including photodynamic therapy and photo bio-stimulation. The light emitting panel utilizes high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) as its light source and side-emitting optical fibers for light delivery.
Abstract:
An apparatus for measuring properties of physical matters by means of Raman spectroscopy including a laser element, a wavelength dispersion element, an array or single element detector, and a control and data processing unit. The laser element, which is used to excite Raman scattering, is spectrum narrowed and stabilized by attachment of a Bragg grating device. The grating can be either a volume Bragg grating (VBG) written inside a glass substrate or a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) written inside an optical fiber. A laser element can be provided with a wavelength modulation capability for fluorescence background suppression.
