    摘要: A white light LED for use in backlighting or otherwise illuminating an LCD is described where the white light LED comprises a blue LED over which is affixed a preformed red phosphor platelet and a preformed green phosphor platelet. In one embodiment, to form a platelet, a controlled amount of phosphor powder is placed in a mold and heated under pressure to sinter the grains together. The platelet can be made very smooth on all surfaces. A UV LED may also be used in conjunction with red, green, and blue phosphor plates. The LED dies vary in color and brightness and are binned in accordance with their light output characteristics. Phosphor plates with different characteristics are matched to the binned LEDs to create white light LEDs with a consistent white point for use in backlights for liquid crystal displays.

    摘要: A light emitting device includes a light emitting element, an optical concentrator, such as a compound parabolic concentrator, a dichroic filter between the light emitting element and the optical concentrator and a wavelength converting material, such as a phosphor. The optical concentrator receives light from the light emitting element, via the dichroic filter, and emits the light from an exit surface, which is smaller than the entrance surface. The optical concentrator may be manufactured from a material with a high refractive index, such as sapphire. The wavelength converting material is, e.g., disposed over the exit surface. The radiance of the wavelength converting material is increased by pumping the wavelength converting material through a high index of refraction material and outputting the converted light into a low refractive index medium, such as air.

    摘要: The invention relates to a light panel (12), comprising: a light guide having a front surface defining a viewing window (11), a back surface and sides (3, 4) between the front and back surfaces; and a patterned array of light sources (8, 9, 10) of at least two types, which types are distinguished by the color of light emitted by the light sources of said at least two types, said array being arranged along at least one of the sides. Each light source generates in use a divergent light beam of a color into the panel to, in combination, color the panel. Further, the array comprises complementary sub-arrays (8, 9, 8, 9 & 9, 10, 9, 10) of light sources along at least two of the sides. Since the sub-arrays are complementary, in that by all light sources of the different types the same amount of light is emitted into the light guide as in prior art single array configurations (the same number of light sources), but from two or more sides while maintaining the general light source pitch, the average distance or pitch between light sources of one of the types, can be decreased. Therewith also the required distance or colors for color mixing is lessened and the viewing window is enlarged.

    摘要: The luminance of a system that includes a light emitting diode (LED), such as a projection system, may be increased by using an LED chip that has a light emitting surface that emits light directly into any medium with a refractive index of less than or equal to approximately 1.25. For example, the LED chip may emit light directly into the ambient environment, such as air or gas, instead of into an encapsulant. The low refractive index decreases the étendue of the LED, which increases luminance. Moreover, without an encapsulant, a collimating optical element, such as a lens, can be positioned close to the light emitting surface of the LED chip, which advantageously permits the capture of light emitted at large angles. A secondary collimating optical element may be used to assist in focusing the light on a target, such as a micro-display.

The LED may emit a light that is converted by the light mixing cavity with a color conversion efficiency ratio greater than 130 lm/W where the light mixing cavity includes two photo-luminescent materials with a peak emission wavelengths between 508-528 nm and 615-655 nm.
