Abstract: An impact test apparatus can be used to determine particle interfacial energies with varying relative air humidity. It was observed that capillary condensation increased the adhesive forces of hydrophilic materials. A systems humidity separation window was identified and the differences in interfacial energy for a hydrophilic surface and for a hydrophobic surface can be exploited in order to achieve the separation of particles. Separation and concentration of particles, particularly particles within a mineral ore body, can be obtained.

Abstract: A safe, simple, and selective method and reagent for deoxyfluorination is disclosed. With the method and reagent disclosed herein, organic compounds such as carboxylic acids, carboxylates, carboxylic acid anhydrides, aldehydes, and alcohols can be fluorinated by using the most common nucleophilic fluorinating reagents and electron deficient fluoroarenes as mediators under mild conditions, giving corresponding fluoroorganic compounds in excellent yield with a wide range of functional group compatibility and easy product purification. For example, directly utilizing KF for deoxyfluorination of carboxylic acids provides the most economical and the safest pathway to access acyl fluorides, key intermediates for syntheses of peptide, amide, ester, and dry fluoride salts.

Abstract: A method to assemble a highly stretchable and highly sensitive strain sensor. Carbon nanofibers prepared by electrospinning of PAN followed by stabilization and carbonization, are sandwiched in two layers of elastomer PU. The CNFs/PU strain sensor shows large strain range of 300%, high sensitivity with gauge factor up to 72.5, and superior stability and durability during 8000 cycles of stretch/release. The CNFs/PU strain sensor shows fast, stable and reproducible responses following the bending movement of fingers, wrists, and elbows. The flexible CNFs/PU strain sensor with has broad applications in wearable devices for human motion monitoring.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of testing medications to evaluate authenticity and identify counterfeits. The testing methods employ a reactive system comprising a solvent and an acid. Optionally, the reactive system can also comprise an organometallic agent. The testing methods can provide rapid results verifying the authenticity of an antimalarial medication. Further the test method can provide clear results that can be implemented and interpreted without special training, anywhere in the world. The test methods can offer quantitative and qualitative results. The test methods are based on reactions that yield different colors where the color can indicate the presence of an active ingredient, and the intensity of the color can indicate the concentration of the active ingredient.

Abstract: An improved system and method for reading an upconversion response from nanoparticle inks is provided. A is adapted to direct a near-infrared excitation wavelength at a readable indicia, resulting in a near-infrared emission wavelength created by the upconverting nanoparticle inks. A short pass filter may filter the near-infrared excitation wavelength. A camera is in operable communication with the short pass filter and receives the near-infrared emission wavelength of the readable indicia. The system may further include an integrated circuit adapted to receive the near-infrared emission wavelength from the camera and generate a corresponding signal. A readable application may be in operable communication with the integrated circuit. The readable application receives the corresponding signal, manipulates the signal, decodes the signal into an output, and displays and/or stores the output.
