Abstract:
An improved film coater which utilizes one or more coater or applicators to transfer coating to the outer surfaces of at least one more rolls, which in turn transfers the coating from the roll surface to one or more sides of the web for coating paper is disclosed. The coater or applicator includes a smoothing doctor on the web and downstream of the one or more rolls, and may also utilize humidity from one of steam showers or a humidity enclosure to assist smoothing. The web may run in any direction, but preferably runs upwardly from the roll toward the doctor to reduce “film split” droplets effect. The present invention also reduces the fiber rise and arrange peel pattern on the coated web, resulting in a smooth uniform coated paper.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an improved doctor blade and bedplate apparatus wherein there is a recess in the bedplate from some position upstream of the doctor blade to some position downstream of the doctor blade. This recess or gap in the area of the bedplate under the doctor blade allows one to form an even or uniform coating on the back of a web of material. This is particularly helpful in forming uniform coatings on the back of a greige good which has face fibers of varying lengths. The present invention also relates to an improved process for preparing a relatively uniform coating on the back of a web of material.

Abstract:
An apparatus for applying a treating mix onto the surface of a moving device in the coating of paper or board. The apparatus comprises a blade carrier (3), doctor means (4) attached to the blade carrier (3), a front wall (9) positioned a distance from the doctor means (4), a device (1) constituting the moving device, said device being arranged in conjunction with the front wall (9) and the doctor means such that it forms a chamber (6, 7) with the front wall (9) and the doctor means, and means (8) for supplying treating agent into an area of the application chamber (6, 7) which is at least essentially opposite to the moving surface. To prevent streaks, a screen plate (10) is fitted in the application chamber, at least partly dividing the application chamber (6, 7) such that with regard to the screen plate (10), the doctor means (4) is arranged on the opposite side thereof to the feed means for the treating agent.
Abstract:
A method for conditioning a metering blade of a paper coating machine. The method includes the steps of providing a paper coating machine having at least one metering blade and passing a movable substrate through the paper coating machine such that the metering blade contacts the substrate to distribute any coatings applied to the substrate. The method further includes the step of applying a solution of abrasive material to the substrate at a location upstream of the metering blade such that the abrasive material engages and conditions the blade.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of formation of a coating film such as a lubricant coating on the surface of a cylindrical base material such as a piston wherein a waste of the lubricant coating solution is prevented and a lubrication action is maintained and a coating layer forming apparatus used for the same. In the state where a cylindrical base material (A) is rotably supported horizontally on a rotating support device and in rotation, when a coating solution (B) supplied from a coating feeder is supplied to a coating surface (D) and a coating film is coated on the surface of the cylindrical base material (A), a coating former (19) equipped with a blade is inclined at an inclined angle (null) of 20null to 80null with respect to a tangential direction of rotation (P) of the cylindrical base material (A), the blade is separated from the coating surface (D) by exactly a coating layer thickness (t) with respect to the coating surface (D), and further the cylindrical base material (A) is rotated by null of a turn or more during a time from the start of the detachment from a coating layer (C) to which the coating solution (B) was supplied to when the detachment is completely ended.
Abstract:
A doctor blade device for machines for the coating of fibrous webs, in particular of paper or cardboard, and for keeping rotating rollers clean has a leaf-shaped doctor blade element (1) which is held by a holding means (2) and which, for a change, can be drawn out laterally on the holding means (2). The doctor blade element (1) is provided at least on one side with a grip part (8).
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the placement of a curable, shear-thinnable polymer composition into a porous web. The apparatus comprises means for applying tension, means for applying the polymer composition to one surface of the tensioned web, and means for shear thinning the composition and placing it into the web to encapsulate at least some of the structural elements of the web, leaving most of the interstitial spaces open. A preferred apparatus includes one or more process heads that has mounted thereto a rigid knife blade for engagement with the web. The knife blade is movable vertically and rotationally. The process head is also movable horizontally along the path of the web. The invention also relates to an apparatus for selectively placing the polymer composition in a substantially continuous region extending through the web so that the polymer composition fills the interstitial spaces and adheres adjacent structural elements of the web in the region. In the areas of the web above and below the filled region, at least some of the structural elements are encapsulated and most of the interstitial spaces are open.
Abstract:
In a device for direct or indirect single or double sided application of a liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving surface with a scoop roll, a nozzle applicator device is positioned prior to the scoop roll relative to the direction of travel of the moving surface.
Abstract:
A device for indirect application of a liquid or viscous medium onto a traveling material web, specifically a paper or cardboard web, includes an applicator device for the application of a layer of liquid or viscous medium onto a surface of a transfer element. The transfer element is in contact with the moving material web and transfers the coating onto the web. A leveling unit is equipped with a leveling element positioned against the material web for smoothing of the coating layer on the material web. The leveling element is mounted rigidly in cross direction to the material web, that is, in a direction substantially orthogonal and in a local material web progression to the direction of travel of the material web.
