An exhaust recirculation of gases in internal combustion engines, notably for automobiles, which has a catalytic converter, recycling apparatus for recycling the exhaust gases and heat recovers apparatus for recovering heat from the exhaust gases. A single heat exchanger is arranged for cooling the recycled exhaust gases and recovering the heat energy from the exhaust gases for heating the passenger compartment of the vehicle and for protecting the catalytic converter from excessively high exhaust temperatures. Valves for diverting exhaust gases, a back-pressure valve and an EGR valve are controlled for this purpose by control electronics. The invention is particularly applicable to direct-injection petrol or diesel engines or to lean-mixture petrol engines.

A method for estimating a temperature of a tip of an exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) sensor used with a heater in an electronic engine control for an engine having an exhaust system wherein the exhaust system includes a variable length exhaust pipe having a short path and a long path for transporting exhaust gas from the engine to the HEGO sensor and an exhaust valve positioned in the exhaust pipe for regulating the flow of exhaust gas between the short path and the long path utilizes control logic to determine whether the exhaust gas is flowing through the short path or the long path, determine a temperature of the unheated HEGO sensor based on the path of flow of the exhaust gas, and determine whether the heater is on. If the heater is not on, an amount of heat applied to the sensor is set to zero. If the heater is on, an increase in the temperature of the HEGO sensor is determined based on an amount of heat applied to the sensor. The control logic then determines the temperature of the heated HEGO sensor based on the temperature of the unheated HEGO sensor and the increase in the temperature.

The engine control apparatus includes an electronic control unit for estimating the amount of purifying capability reducing substances other than nitrogen oxides, which decreases the nitrogen oxide adsorbing ability of the catalytic device, absorbed by the catalytic device, on the basis of the accumulated value of vehicle travel distance, fuel consumption of engine, or intake air amount. The control unit changes the operating condition of engine so that the exhaust gas temperature is increased when it is judged that the estimated adsorption amount has reached a predetermined adsorption amount. The exhaust purifying catalytic device is heated by high-temperature exhaust gas to remove the purifying capability reducing substances from the catalytic device.

Methods and apparatus are provided for monitoring the performance of a hydrocarbon trapping device which removes hydrocarbons from an engine exhaust stream during cold startup conditions before the catalyst has reached its light-off temperature. The electronic engine controller which provides conventional fuel control functions is used to numerically integrate sensed values during a predetermined time interval in the engine's startup period. The sensed values indicate the rate at which hydrocarbons are being retained or purged by the trap, and the result of the integration indicates the total amount of hydrocarbon molecules trapped or purged. The integration result values may be retained for future readout during diagnostic procedures, and the result values may be compared with a threshold value to generate an alarm indication whenever the integration result value indicates that the trap is not performing satisfactorily.

A device for the treatment of exhaust gases leaving an internal combustion engine in which a main flow passage for the gases is surrounded by another passage having therein axially arranged treatment chambers containing catalyst material. The main flow passage is provided with a flow control valve which, at low engine speeds, diverts substantially all of the exhaust gases to the outer passage surrounding the main flow passage, while at higher speeds the valve deflects and permits an ever increasing amount of the exhaust gases to pass through the main flow passage. The main flow passage and the outlet end of the outer passage containing the catalyst chambers are coaxially arranged and taper inwardly so that there is a mingling of the gases from the passages at the discharge end of the device. The device is adapted for direct connection to the exhaust manifold of an engine and can be incorporated directly therein.
