A radiator through which a coolant flows and which is cooled by the cooling air supplied by a cooling air blower is associated with an internal combustion engine as a rule. An airflow guidance housing disposed between the radiator and the cooling air blower is used to guide the air. With an uneven flow of cooling air, the maximum efficiency of the radiator cannot be utilized. The cooling air flow is evened out and the cooling output is increased in that the flow resistance in the radiator or in a flow grating associated with it is greater in the areas close to the cooling air blower than in the areas remote from the cooling air blower. To achieve corresponding flow resistances, it is contemplated to make the distances between cooling fins in the radiator or segments in the flow grating of different width in the respective zones.

Torque is transmitted from the drive pulley to the driven pulley by means of a power transmission belt (43) including a drive portion (45) and slack portion (47). An idler pulley (55) engages the drive portion of the belt, and a tensioner device (61) and tensioner pulley (69) engage the slack portion of the belt. The tensioning device includes a rotatable arm (65) and is operable to maintain relatively constant belt tension as the engine and drive pulley move relative to the radiator and fan drive assembly.

A cooling fan to be located between an internal combustion engine and a radiator and rotatingly driven from a rotational shaft of the engine. The fan includes a plurality of blade elements radially projecting from a boss portion and a cylindrical ring formed at the outer ends of the blade elements coaxially with the boss portion. In each blade element, a base line, which is drawn through a base point located on a chord of blade between leading and trailing edges of the blade element at a distance of 40% from the leading edge in percentage to the length of the chord, describes a straight or moderately curved line from the inner to the outer end of the blade element, which is inclined rotationally forward of a radial line passing through the base point at the inner end of the blade element. This fan construction produces air flows containing axial and radial components of velocity to increase the air flows through the radiator irrespective of the existence of the internal combustion engine on the downstream side of the fan. Maximum air flow is obtained by projecting the trailing edge of the outer end of each blade element from the trailing edge of the above-mentioned ring by a length corresponding to 1/3 of the chord length of the outer blade end.

An internal combustion engine with a noise-suppressing encapsulation has a drive wheel for auxiliary units which is driven by the crankshaft of the engine and arranged outside the encapsulation. The drive wheel consists of two concentric parts which are connected via at least one elastic member. The inner part of the drive wheel has cooling air ducts which extend from inlet ends on the side opposite an opening in the encapsulation wall to a exit ends on the side adjacent the opening, the exit ends being spaced a greater distance from the axis of rotation than the inlet ends, although still lying within the noted opening. Thus a blower is provided in the form of a centrifugal pump. A cover is connected to the outer part of the drive wheel which covers the inner part and has sound-isolated suction openings for the cooling air.
