A novel time-domain equalizer (TEQ) is provided for the receiver of a Discrete Multi-tone (DMT) system to shorten the length of the effective channel impulse response. The TEQ is based on a variant of the conventional decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) structure along with a training method for the TEQ settings. By using this DFE-based TEQ for DMT systems, the data symbols transmitted through the effective shortened channel would be more reliable.

A finite impulse response filter, including a plurality of taps arranged to receive and process a sequence of input data samples so as to generate a filter output. Each tap consists of a multiplier operating in one's complement arithmetic, the multiplier being coupled to multiply a respective input sample from the sequence by a respective equalization coefficient, and an adder, which sums an output from the multiplier. The taps are arranged in sequence so that the input sample to each of the taps, except to a first tap in the sequence, is delayed relative to a preceding tap in the sequence. The filter also includes an adjustment-accumulator coupled to receive the filter output and responsive thereto to generate an adjustment that is adapted to correct the filter output to a twos complement result, and an adjustment-adder which sums the adjustment and the filter output to generate a final output.

A method and a system for providing an input signal from a multiple decision feedback equalizer to a decoder based on a tail value and a subset of coefficient values received from a decision-feedback equalizer. A set of pre-computed values based on the subset of coefficient values is generated. Each of the pre-computed values is combined with the tail value to generate a tentative sample. One of the tentative samples is selected as the input signal to the decoder. In one aspect of the system, tentative samples are saturated and then stored in a set of registers before being outputted to a multiplexer which selects one of the tentative samples as the input signal to the decoder. This operation of storing the tentative samples in the registers before providing the tentative samples to the multiplexer facilitates high-speed operation by breaking up a critical path of computations into substantially balanced first and second portions, the first portion including computations in the decision-feedback equalizer and the multiple decision feedback equalizer, the second portion including computations in the decoder.

An impulse response of a channel is estimated by cross-correlating a known training signal with a received training signal to produce a cross-correlation vector. The cross-correlation vector is characterized by a known noise component resulting from the finiteness of the correlation. A correction vector is estimated based on the known training signal, where the correction vector is related to the noise component. Truncated representations of the correction vector are iteratively subtracted from the cross-correlation vector in order to produce a succession of cross-correlation outputs of increased accuracy. When the cross-correlation output is sufficiently accurate, it may be used to determine the weights to be given to the taps of an equalizer.

A feedback equalizer is provided that minimizes the critical path time in a multi-level modulation receiver. The critical path is reduced by parallel operation of some summation components of the feedback equalizer. The critical path is further reduced by pre-computing coefficients for the feedback equalizer. Further, the critical path is reduced using an adaptive feedback equalizer which uses parallelism or pre-computation to calculate the feedback equalization coefficients using an adaptation engine.

A dynamic mask vector is used to mask active taps generated by the equalizer tap update unit when an unmasked signal output by the equalizer filter is selected by the switch to generate an error signal fed to the equalizer tap update unit. A fixed mask vector is used to mask active taps generated by the equalizer tap update unit when a masked signal output by the equalizer filter is used to generate the error signal.
