A self-heating surface, system and method for use in a transportation network are described. The heated surface does not require electricity to generate heat as a heating source. The self-heating surface preferably forms one or more portions or sections of a transportation network, including pedestrian walkways, roads, railways, or airport runways. The self-heating surface comprises an inner heating member which is fully encapsulated by an outer shell material. The self-heating surface is designed to prevent or minimize accumulation of snow or ice upon the surface by providing a heated surface capable of melting any snow or ice falling on, resting on, or forming thereupon.

A void reducing asphalt membrane composition for asphalt pavements that includes: an asphalt binder; an elastomeric polymer; a wax modifier; and at least one of: i) fumed silica or fumed alumina; and ii) a saponified fatty acid and a resin acid gelling compound. The composition is resistant to flow when applied and migrates into hot mix asphalt in the area of the longitudinal joint to reduce air voids to 7% or less and reduce water permeability. The composition becomes tack-free quickly after application. The composition bonds to asphalt, concrete, brick, stone and metal.

The present invention relates to a paving method of forming an intermediate layer, where a non-solidifying rubberized asphalt penetrates, on an asphalt mixture for base layer or a cement concrete to provide a permeable layer and an impermeable (intermediate) layer simultaneously with a single paving process for surface layer. The waterproofing and draining functions of the non-solidifying rubberized asphalt layer completely block water or moisture from penetrating into the underlying layer and protect the roads from damage due to freezing temperature with the moisture penetrating into the group in winter. The non-solidifying rubberized asphalt layer constituting the intermediate layer has the non-solidifying rubberized asphalt melt down and move upwards under the paving temperature and pressure applied during the paving process of forming a surface layer and firmly bind with the base layer, thereby completing an integrated pavement structure with enhanced water resistance and durability.

A method for applying a fast curing epoxy traffic marking composition is provided in which curing agents are coated on a carrier such as glass beads or porous silica. These carriers are dropped onto the epoxy coating and promote rapid curing of the top layer of the epoxy coating while the bottom layer is given additional time to adhere to the roadway surface. This enables the application contractor to open a marked roadway in a quicker manner with less motorist disruption.

A system and apparatus for cutting grooves in a surface includes a housing having a rotatable cutting head mounted therein. An actuator drives the cutting head out of and into contact with the surface. Sensors disposed on the housing sense a depth of the groove cut by the cutting head. A controller is arranged to receive a signal from the sensors and compare the depth of the groove with a predetermined reference depth. The controller sends a signal to the actuator and adjusts the position of the cutting head via the actuator to maintain the depth of the groove at about the reference depth.

In a method for delivering a warning of a hazardous road surface state for application in a travelling motor vehicle in which the air temperature is measured, a targeted prediction of the road surface state is to be made so that the output of a warning can be avoided in many cases in which such a warning was not objectively justified. This is achieved by means of a contactless measurement method by which means the moisture of the road surface is determined and by means of which the temperature of the road surface is determined where a value describing the road surface state is determined taking into account these three measured values. The warning is then delivered depending on the value describing the road surface state.
