A height, as measured from the reference line L to the top 1a' of the peak 1a is chosen in the range of from 1 to 8 .mu.m. The space created by forming the valleys 1b allows the supply of lubricant oil to be increased, thereby simultaneously achieving a reduction in the frictional resistance and the occurrence of an impact sound.

A gas turbine including a joint structure is disclosed. According to the joint structure, a ceramic shaft is received in a bore formed in an end portion of a metallic shaft. Brazing filler metal made of Ag-Cu alloy is distributed between the closely fitted surfaces of the ceramic shaft and bore wall, and it extends axially toward the open end of the bore up to a predetermined plane where a ring seal groove formed on the end portion of the metallic shaft lies. The open end of the bore is closed to prevent entrance of exhaust gas into the bore.

A linkage element for releasing a mechanism under influence of temperature, such as a fire extinguishing sprinkler or ventilation shutter. The element must be capable of retaining a maximum bias force, but has also to show a short response time to excessive temperature conditions. The linkage element comprises a pair of coplanar flat jaws, opposite to each other and having a common base. The resistance to flexion in the plane of each jaw is high, whereas the resistance in a plane perpendicular thereto is low. The element further comprises a shape memory alloy, treated for moving the jaws apart from each other in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the jaws when the critical temperature is reached. The element is preferably made in the form of a small thin plate of shape memory alloy.

A method of attaching a metal shaft (10) to a ceramic shaft (12) having a first diameter (d.sub.1) is characterized by the following steps. A shaft portion (16) is formed on the ceramic shaft with a second diameter (d.sub.2) less than the first diameter. The shaft portion extends from a free end (18) thereof along a portion of the length of the ceramic shaft to a terminal end (20) thereof. A circular shaped metal lock nut (22) is placed on the shaft portion in an encircling relationship therewith. This lock nut has threads (24) on an outer facing surface thereof and a back end (26) which contacts the terminal end of the shaft portion. A circular shaped expansion sleeve (28) is placed on the shaft portion in an encircling relationship therewith, the expansion sleeve extending from the metal lock nut to the free end of the shaft portion. All of the members are cooled and then assembled with an adjustable metal plug (30) and the metal shaft formed so as to have both a hollow interior portion (34) and threads (36) formed on a free end (32) of the metal shaft. The assembly is carried out so that the threads of the lock nut are engaged with the threads of the metal shaft. The expansion sleeve is trapped in a volume defined by the shaft portion, the hollow interior portion of the metal shaft, the lock nut, and the adjustable metal plug. The plug is encircled by the hollow interior portion of the metal shaft and is located between the free end of the shaft portion and a closed end (38) of the hollow interior portion of the metal shaft.
