The application layer security proxy inspects a received, inbound data packet at the application layer, and either drops the data packet, forwards the data packet, or processes the data packet rather than dropping it in order to maintain the communications network connection, the later two according to a predefined role-based access control policy. The application layer security proxy calculates a round trip time for each reply to a received, inbound data packet and observes the bandwidth usage from the amount of bytes transmitted. Round trip time and bandwidth usage are used to detect abnormal communication traffic.

A first block of texels of the HDR texture in a red-green-blue (RGB) space may be transformed to a second block of texels in a luminance-chrominance space. The first block may have red values, green values and blue values. The second block may have luminance values and chrominance values. The chrominance values may be based on a sum of the red values, a sum of the green values and a sum of the blue values. The luminance values and the chrominance values may be converted to an 8-bit integer format. The luminance values may be modified to restore a local linearity property to the second block. The second block may be compressed.

Image resizing for web-based searching is described. In one implementation, a system resizes a user-selected thumbnail image into a larger version of the image that emulates the quality of a large, original image, but without downloading the original image. First, the system extracts resizing parameters when each thumbnail image is created. Then, the system creates a codebook of primitive visual elements extracted from a collection of training images. The primitive visual elements in the codebook provide universal visual parts for reconstructing images. The codebook and a resizing plug-in can be sent once to the user over a background channel. When the user selects a thumbnail image for enlargement, the system resizes the thumbnail image via interpolation and then refines the enlarged image with primitive visual elements from the codebook. The refinement creates an enlarged image that emulates the quality of the large, original image, without downloading the original image.

The method addresses the problem that not all faults can be determined and removed at the time of system design and testing. When a fault translates into a time-out condition in one or more controllers, symptoms are identified, persistence is measured, other involved controllers are identified, the fault condition is identified and control laws are reconfigured to avoid the fault condition in the future.

The technique includes parsing first-compressed texture information (e.g., S3TC texture information) into respective components of the first-compressed texture information (such as main color information, color index information, main alpha information, and alpha index information). The technique then further compresses the respective components to yield second-compressed texture information (referred to as modified compressed texture information or MCT texture information). The MCT texture information can be stored and then decoded to reconstruct the original S3TC texture information for use in the graphics application. Compared to the use of unmodified S3TC texture information, the technique allows more economical storage of texture information, as well as more efficient loading of the texture information from storage to memory.
